I am worried about my mobo....I think that I am going to have to (from now on) take off my slk800(a) everytime I take my computer to a friends place even if it's only down the street...this is due to my noticing that everytime I transport this beast my temps increase....I really don't want to hassel with reseqating this darn thing again but if I have to I will I suppose.....you guys think it would be easier if I had the 800(u) bolts and such so I can bolt it in so all I gata do to reseat it is unbolt it...which means I wont have to take off my mobo everytime?...thanks for the advice.....also can I get my 800(a) to become a (u) or are there other matters and if I can do I just order the(u) clips from thermalright...thanks a ton :D

Yup, a U would be much better in terms of stability. And its not that heavy, you don't need to worry. You're likely to cause more problems removing it so often than just letting it stay on.
Don't jostle the machine, don't drop it, and try to keep the SLK-800 pointing up when carrying the system (like a desktop case). It'll be fine.

The uses A uses a clip and the U uses bolts. How can't the clip be easier. When you transport your machine lay it mobo side down on its side. I have always done that and even with the original Glaciator that weighe like 1 1/2 pounds it was fine. I think Mark is saying that the U is attached more securely to the mobo and has less of a chance to move around or break the socket.

i think u means universal meaning it will run on other athlons and intels???

I don't see how moving the PC, even if parts were coming loose (which I doubt would happen to a careful PC owner), I don't see how loose parts could mean more heat.

If your temps are higher.. somehow... it could be from ambient room temps, or the fact that you are gaming and the gfx card is heating up as well. If you are careful with your PC, you won't be damaging it.

Well, if the heatsink shifts around it can mess with the contact of the thermal compound. Where once it had settled in, now it is shifted a bit creating small gaps for heat to get stuck in.

I think it just means thermalright has found a way to improve on this heatsink and is releasing it as a new revision with a U added to the name

If you take the sink off then you have to add new AS3 and your temps are going to go up til that sets in which is a long time. If you move it often, you'll never see the full capacity of the AS3 as it will always be setting in. Just my opinion.

so then ya think I should just leave it be and let it resettle in ?...thanks for the advice so far :D

I do the best I can when I move the thing....thing is I have been moving alot and sometimes room is limited:(......since I have already moved it like 4 times I think I will just let it resettle...especially since I don't have the little pads on the chip so it does kinda wiggle a tad more then when with it....but I figured the connection would be tighter without pads in the way....anywho I think I am going to let it re settle...:D

the 'U' is no different from the 'a'. They are one and the same, 'cept they 'u' uses bolts and can be used on intels and amds, and the 'a' uses the clip - for amd's only (and socket 370's)

thoses slk-800's are dangerous, trust me lol. I've killed a chip by accentally kicking my pc. it caused the H/s to flex on the clip and crush one side of the core:eek:

a shim is a good idea if your worried about crushing the core. i wouldnt keep taking the 'sink off, though. Just carry the pc desktop-stylee.

This the XP1700+ you have overclocked to 2.4Ghz on air? Wow I doubt a thermal pad will allow that, but that was an option I was going to suggest. Carrying it very-very carefully may be the best answer.

I use a thermal pad and a midrange fan with my SK-7

Looks I'm late to this thread but I want to cast a vote for the U since it has better stability in laying flat. When I move my PC the temps tend to go up like yours, and when I reinstall the sink you can see that the paste has smeared off one side of the cpu because of the jostling. Those amd clips weren't made to hold these monster sinks espcially if you're going to be moving the case.
