I have a cable modem and a router. I decided to get a switch so that I can use one of my computers to host a webserver and for small game servers for friends and I. I plugged everything in and it should have worked. I connected the cable modem to the switch and then the switch to the router. The computers hooked up through the router work fine, but the one directly into the switch won't work. I am using windows xp pro on all of the computers. Any ideas? Never did this before, but I was told to just plug it in and it would just work.

Most cable companys limit the number of IP addresses you can have. So you can either phone them up and purchase another one (costs vary) or hook that computer up to the router and just forward ports for web (80/tcp) and your game servers (varies).

What router and switch do you have? You might be able to turn on DHCP and NAT, which would give each computer an "internal" IP and still use only one "external" IP.

Try hooking it up like this, Cable Modem->Router->Switch->Computers.

If the cable company only let's you use one IP address then the way that you are trying won't work, since the router probably is setup with the external IP address and then "routes" the packets to the other computers that are connected to the router, that's why those ones work. Since the router is configured to access the internet any PC placed before it won't work, unless you a valid IP address, which you might have to purchase like Smokeys said. So with one IP address, I'd say you can either have the router on the internet or the PC, but not both.

I have a compaq cp-2w router and a Gigafast 5-port ethernet switch.

Then its pointless. I have enough ports on my router for all my computers, I just want one not to have to deal with the firewall and junk like that.

The computers HAVE to be behind the router in order for internet to be shared. Putting the computers on the switch, and connecting the cable modem to the switch nullifies the router, and puts the computer ahead of the router.

Doing it Cable Modem -> Router -> Switch -> Computers lets the computers talk at 100meg and still share the internet. This also helps break up the latency of everything going through the router. Internal traffic stays internel, external stays external.

Do it this way : Cable Modem -> Router -> Switch ->

Like Kingslayer said. Then forward ports for whatever you need to have access too. If you have to have one box outside then use DMZ.

Thats my only option I guess, other than getting a second ip. O well...

It is the better more secure option unless you get a second IP. Especially if you can avoid using the DMZ. Routers make it easy to forward ports so you do not have to have the whole machine exposed to the Internet. If you need any help getting something to work thru your router or even finding the right ports do not hesitate to ask:D (After you use Google and the search feature;))
