How well do you think this would work.

Getting at Swiftech MCX478, a 80mm to 120mm Adapter and using A YS Tech 131CFM fan? The theory sound good, to me at least. Just want to get some other opinions. Thanks.

Actually this is a bad idea. Those adapters for one restrict airflow alot, I've seen some reviews on them. Also the central hub on a 120mm fan is ALOT bigger then an 80mm and so you have a huge dead spot right where you actually need the most airflow...in the center. You can try it and soo, but I can almost guarantee you wont see much results. Just my opinoin though, try it and see.

You got a link for one of those reviews? I am just trying to get the most cooling performance possible with the least amount of noise. Btw, what is a Maze3?

Truthfully I cant remember any links (or even the sites...if i do run acros one I'll pot the link). Maze 3 is the newest waterblock from Danger Den (www.dangerden.com). SHould be here sometime next week and depending on wether or not OCH ever decided to sebd my res/pump I'll have my system together.

Ive never used water cooling before. How hard is it to set up and maintain? And what kind of cost are we talking about. Is there any links to kinda do a walk through on it? Thanks.

josh, you need to take into account that the fan will be further away from heatsink so that would eliminate any dead spot there would have been. It's basicly what I have done in both my systems except I went the cheap route with cardboard plus it is a little longer than the adapter and I get a temp of 32c full load with my 1.4 tbird at default. with any intel chip you shouldn't have a problem getting into the high 20's as long as heatsink is getting cool air natually you can expect too go lower than what case temps are. that is why mine are longer to suck cold air right from the room cutting case temps out of the picture all together. Look at it this way 120mm fan 69cfm 35db + adapter + no dead spot or 80mm delta 68cfm 48db. now which would you prefer?

Oh yeah lots, just look under the front page under watercooling and there are a bunch. As for cost it all depends on how serious ya want to get. But even a very "cheap" WC setup will do better then almost any air cooling you can think of. I went the high class route and got the best waterblock and pump I could find, and then a $20 heatercore for a car as my radiator. But you can go much cheaper. I am sure you could throw together a very decent setup for under $100 and have something ALOT quieter then what you would need for air cooling to get prolly worse temps.

I'd have to contest that. Yes taking it away slightly would help the "dead spot" problem, but by no means does it eliminate it. And the size of the 120 mm dead spot is HUGE compared to an 80mm. Just hold the two fans up to each other and see how much of the 80mm is actually covered by just the hub of the 120mm. I'm not saying he wouldnt see better temps, but then again he might not. And as for the higher CFM, like I said I've seen revews that say these adapters restrict flow (forcing the air into a smaller channel so quickly) so that would lessen then greater airflow seen my the large fan. Again, this would be a fine experiment and I suggest he try it if he already has the parts. But if not I would advice not wasting the money. (IMO only)

It was just a thought. I am probally going to go with the Alpha and a 50CFM fan, but I was trying to sqeeze out a little performance with the Swiftech. Thanks for the advise.

there is alot of crap out there. och has a rep for take forever to deliver their goods. dangerden has better kits and also better service.

If your going to cut corner on watercooling you will be in for a rude awakening. It's not like buying other parts for your computer as long as you use some type of corriosion prevention you will be able to transfer from one system to another except maybe for block
