Which hsf should I go with:

Swiftech MCX478
or
Alpha PAL8942 w/ 68.5 cfm fan

Im using a P4 1.6a (@133fsb=2.12 ghz) on an MSI 645 ultra 333.

Is the swiftech worth the 12$ more?

they are within 1 C of difference either one you choose will be good, but the swifty got heliocoid fins so after weeks running your temps will go higher because of the dust trapped in the fins. I would go for alpha and with the extra 12$ i would buy a better fan.

So the two heat sinks are basically identical? It just depends on what fan I use?

Why does this always have to be so difficult?

You can't be serious?

Yeah I am serious. My Volcano 7+ is running at 26C at idle. My Dragon Orb was at 33C idle. I dont see many better than that. You do know I said Volcano 7 plus not the regular volcano 7? In my opinion it is as good at the others at a lower cost. 6000rpm fan that pushes 50CFM's and the heatsink has a .29c/w thermal resistance rating. You can set the fan at 300/4800/6000RPM. And from the reviews it seems to do just as well at 4800 than at 6000. Its not very loud on medium at only 35db's and even on high its only at 47db's. And not to mention it looks really good. So if you have an windowed case it brings out your system. You gonna ask me if I am serious again?

nikhsub1 get this somebody with a orb giving advice on which hsf to get.

You know some of the people on this forum are just about as useless as tits on a waste basket.

As I have just stated my Orb was running at 33C idle and at 37C full load. My Volcano 7+ is at 26C idle and 31C full load. Can you beat that? I didn’t think so. So go back playing with GI Joes and stop making dissing on what you have no idea about.

I was just giving my advice. He doesn’t have to take it if he does not want it. Just as you have your own opinion I have mine. So stop trying to make others look like jackasses, all you accomplished was to **** me off, and to prove that some people (i.e. you for one) should not be allowed to breed.

sure I can beat that with ease. and my thermal resistance is .18

No need to get your panties in a twist over this. The original question was, " Should I get an 8045 or a MCX462"? I didn't hear anything of a Volcano 7+, did you? Anyway both those heatsinks are better than the Volcano 7+, that's why I asked if you were serious. Relax and don't take everything so personally.

I would say the swifty all the way, I have the older Mc462 and just love it, I also had the ALPHA 8045 and just sold it with a system. They are both excellent heatsinks and make for a difficult choice. I will just fill you in on some of my experiences and you can go from there.

I ran both these heatsinks on a 1.4 T.B., both achieved the same OC of 1644 with the swifty running 1'C cooler at 41'c full load with a ambient temp of 22'C this @ 2.00volts running seti 24/7.

I would suggest if you do go with the swifty to purchase a variable control for the fan, well even the alpha they can be pretty annoying.

Hope this helps but its a very difficult choice.

Hmm, for less $$$ Id go with a Thermalright AX-7. For full blown performance and if you dont care about your hearing, the Swifty. My $.02.

You also don't need to remove the whole mobo if you want to install or remove the AX-7. For example if you want to upgrade tge thermal compund or unlock the mults,, it makes it much easier and faster.

I have an Alpha 8045, and it's great!(Y.S. Tech 60 CFM) I also just ordered the AX-7 over the swifty because I will do a lot of experimenting with it (removing the HSF). I think for now I will put a Sunon 43 CFM fan on there since it is for the computer in my room, and I have to sleep with it on since I need to crunch my seti.
