I am going to switch to AMD since my birthday is April 10th, so i will pick up 2 things:

AMD DURON 800/850
Motherboard

The only thing is, what motherboard should i get. I am limited to a budget of 200 dollars. The chip is going to cost me 80 (850) so i have another 100 (other 20 for shipping). What motherboard should i get? I know that the Kt7a-raid and kt7a are good, but too expensive. What about the EPOX 8kta+ i think that is what it is called. I heard that was a very good board, but how much is it?

Thanx, I have a feeling you will be seeing me around the AMD forums alot!

Look m8.
AMD is not like Intel.
The chips arent multiplier locked.
The 850 is basically an 800 with the multiplier cranked up.
Get the 800, or even a 700 if you can find one..
They will all fly to 1gig easily..
Its worth splashing out on an Abit board.
Try and find a KT7 "end of line" board.
You can get one for £77($108)
Im sure you could find a KT7A for under $140.
Its worth spending the extra cash for quality components...

$20 for shipping a CPU??? That's a LOT! :)

I had the same budget problem when looking for upgrades. I settled on an epox 8kta3 for $114 w/ free s&h at www.newegg.com and an 800mhz duron for $65 w/ $9fan(fan gives you 1 year warranty on duron)and $6.95 s&h at www.TCWO/com.
I have read every reivew of the epox i can find and it seems to be a very good board for the price.

Tachyon.. i think he was allowing $20 for shipping of board. 8)
The epox is ok, but Abit is better

go with the epox, then you don't have to jump on the band wagon later when there on top, cuz it won't be long

I must disagree, Abit is OK, but Epox is up there with it if not better in my opinion. (just my opinion and I know a few others that feel the same way) If you jump on the Epox wagon, get the 8kta3.

how come you guys dont suggest getting a t-bird 700 instead of a 800/850 duron? it has mor l2 cache and they're about the same price.
do the lower end t-birds not oc as well as the durons or something?

Thanx alot guyz for replying. I am still not sure of what board to get. I am stuck between the ABIT KT7A-RAID and the EPOX 8KTA3. I like the kt7a-raid because of ata100 raid, but it is kind of expensive. But both of them are good for high FSB's so i am still stuck.

I think i might go for the 8kta3 because of sooo many recommendations. Does anyone have both of the boards? Which one has better performance?

If you don't intend to run a RAID setup, don't pay for it. The KT7A is all you need. As for a CPU, I recommend a Duron 600. For a $40.00 CPU, they overclock beautifully. Gettin to 10x100 with mine was the easiest thing I ever accomplished in OCing. My personal opinion is that they overclock better than 650s, 700s and 750s, and at relatively lower core voltages. Spend the extra money on a good heatsink.
Here's what my 600 Duron does at different voltages.

i have the abit kt7a board
it is pretty good
i got mine from www.essencom.com for about $140
and then do what Hoot told u get a duron 600
i was stupid not to get one myself i got a 850
they are the same thingi will get one when the computer show comes by on april 7

www.newegg.com has the Iwill kk266 for $125 free shipping. I bought this board and it is great. This board is very easy to overclock and very stable. The setting are done via the bios. I did not unlock my CPU (850 Tbird) yet, But I am running my front side buss at 120mhz. This puts my CPU at
1.020 Gig. This board also has sound on it. I left my sound blaster live card in my old system. Pretty good sound card for on board. Good luck with your new board whatever you choose.

I'd suggest getting a t-bird 700 instead of a 800/850 duron.

As for the motherboard, I'd suggest going with Asus. I guess they aren't very popular around here :-( but I swear by them ;-). If price is a serious concern, you can pick up an Asus A7v for just over $100 ($113 on pricewatch) and for $125 you can get an Asus A7v133 which should easily be able to hit 150 FSB (mine can but my 3Com NIC is holding me back).

Basically m8, heres what i think.
Duron 600, or T-bird 850
Abit KTA ( raid if you need it) or Iwill KK266
Taisol 742 HSF.
Arictic Silver.
Try selling what you already have, and dont want, on ebay.com
Its worth the extra for a quality board...

Iwill KK266 KT133A ATA 100 ATX 266FSB (for AMD Thunderbird cpus) - Retail Box No CPU 140 dollars after shipping GREAT MOBO
that leave 60 for cpu ouch let me see what i come up with foudn a tbird 700 for 72 dollors but that mobo will be able to handle anything up put on it.
