I remember using militias to kill tanks in Civ1

"Civilization 7 is almost here and the developers decided to give me access for the last few weeks to help them find interesting bugs, glitches and exploits with the game. Low and behold the game is full of them and I have been doing my best to package them up into fun and silly videos. This today is my scientific discovery to see if I can take a sword wielding roman legion and make them more powerful than a modern age tank. The tank has a combat strength of 65 which is incredibly high in comparison to the romans 25. A tank can easily 1 hit a roman because well its a tank. However today I will be cheesing some of the silly game design to create a roman super soldier program that cannot be stopped. My Units will become immortal super soldiers that can somehow defeat aircraft carrier boats."

Civ 2 (fantastic worlds) and Civ5 (hd texture pack) for me, the rest have always been kinda meh 🤷🏻‍♂️

Saw that video earlier. Almost makes me want to try it, but I'm more worried if I do like it. Goodbye time!

Which was the last isometric one? III? I think that was the last one I really liked. Didn't like newer as it didn't feel right to me.

Technically, all but the 1st are isometric view, but the game textures kinda mask it, personally I would say the 5th, graphics from the 6th are very cartoonish compared.

I could use one more CPU for tests, and there is a promo for a free Civ 7 with all "modern" Intel CPUs (also PCs and gaming laptops). However, for some reason, it's not available in the EU. I think I will get 9800X3D, as prices in my local stores are currently at the MSRP level, so it won't get much lower anytime soon.

Btw. I grabbed F1 24 for ~$12 at Steam yesterday. I know it's a different game, but maybe someone wants it.

I just went back to check.

Civ I - top down square grid. I'd call this "2D" era.
Civ II and III - what I'd call isometric. Square grid is tilted and rotated relative to screen edges. I just learnt there is a thing called dimetric that might be more correct than isometric to describe this.
Civ IV - square grid running parallel to screen edges. Camera can be manually tilted.
Civ V - hex grid. I stopped caring at this point.

Also I was wrong on which version I like most. I have Civ III to V on Steam. I fired III up and didn't recognise it at all. Checking screenshots of Civ II, that was the game I was actually thinking of. I think I never played III+ when it was current, and only picked it up much later on Steam by which point I have lost interest. I do remember trying the demo of V and really didn't like it.

Civ II was apparently released in 1996 and I have no idea where to find my copy now. It may also explain the lack of clarity in my memory!

Bottom of the closet underneath the stairs? You can get them either as a physical copy on eBay/others or abandonware. There's also a dedicated website for all games Civ with a crazy amount of patches (official and unofficial), mods, maps, etc etc etc, civfanatics I think.

I love Civ2 but it really needs the DLCs to shine.

I've moved 5 times since then. I'll have to poke through whatever CDs I can find at some point. Most of my stuff is still in boxes from my last move about a year ago. I'm pretty sure I had multiple copies of Civ II: Test of Time on CD for some reason I don't remember. Was it bundled with something or given away?

90% sure I got mine (or was it fantastic worlds) through a gaming magazine that came with CDs (demos, benchs and the like), different country though.

Sometimes I play Civ VI, but I set a custom map and the base version rules because each new DLC made the game worse. Some of these ideas are good, but most are annoying.

"Hackers successfully cracked the Linux version of Sid Meier's Civilization VII four days before its scheduled February 11 release. The compromise stems from the Linux build's DRM-free architecture, which contrasts its Windows counterpart's Denuvo anti-tampering protection. The cracked version, identified under the signature "Linux-Razor1911," has proliferated across multiple file-sharing networks and torrents, presenting immediate challenges for publisher 2K and developer Firaxis Games. The straightforward exploitation process utilizes standard Linux mounting protocols and executable script deployment. While the crack enables immediate access to the base game, circumventing official distribution channels could compromise essential network features and post-launch stability patches."

That's honestly going to be an issue going forward and makes me nervous that companies won't release on Linux/steamdeck because of fears of piracy that they can avoid with Denuvo. Or at least not releasing at the same time as Windows/Consoles.

Heh, my 1st thought was "wow, razor are still around?", I remember these guys from my Commodore Amiga times... I doubt they make a big fuss over one game, sure, Civ is a big brand, but stuff like this is much rarer on Linux than Windows.

"Civilization VII Performance Benchmark Review - 35 GPUs Tested"

"What on Earth is going on with Civilization 7?!"

"Civilization 7 has been met with mixed reviews, facing backlash from some predictable inclusions like leaders and changing civs, but also some core problems or missing elements. In this video I'll cover off the main criticisms of Civilization 7 as I see them: missing features, bad UI, bad maps, the DLC model, and multiplayer issues. Then, we'll review Firaxis' response and what's coming in the next Civ 7 patch. Finally I'll conclude by giving my impression of civ 7 following on from my civ 7 review, where I'll again conclude that this is the definitive Civ moving forward, one that will improve with time, and one that rivals the launch version of civilization 5 and civ 6 with ease. If this is true, and the civ history of updates and improvements continues, I believe Civ 7 will eventually (1-2 years max, for most) claim the mantle of the most popular civ game and hold it for years to come."

The premiere is on Tuesday, so how do all those people know all the problems, and there are so many reviews? ...
I find all those pointed-out complaints stupid. Who said that game was supposed to be this or that way? They won't change anything; all will complain they made the same game. They change many things; people complain they changed everything. Don't like it, don't play it.
Also all those who "review" it got it for free (legally or not). The Intel CPU promo with a free game is unavailable in most countries, but it enables download links on the premiere day. There is no early access. How can someone request a refund when the game is unavailable yet? Also, how can someone write a review and add that he/she can ask for a refund because he/she wasn't playing for more than 2 hours?

Tbh. I wish for more personal comments and less stupid influencer videos.

It looks like Early Access started a few days ago.

  • Early Access - play the game up to 5 days early on February 6, 2025

I missed that. It's not mentioned anywhere else. Still, many "reviews" have over a week.

I won't judge until I play it. I didn't like what they did in all DLCs of Civ VI, so I'm waiting to see real changes.
