Hello to everyone - first night logged in...so far, great site & great help.

So heres the deal....

Bottom line - System crashes. Even at default mobo settings, wont run @ 1.33 [1.32 was max] I upped the voltage, and was running well for a while (few hours) then died on me.

Temps:
CPU: 52C
Mobo: 26C

System Specs:

Athlon 1.33
Asus a7m266
512mb PC2100
WD 40gb, WD 13.5gb, Maxtor 15gb
Old geforce256 (From compaq)
Enermax 460w
Zalman cnps 5000 w/ 80cfm Delta
Lian-Li pc69
SB Live 5.1
SIIG Controller Card (Not SCSI)

Thanks for any info.
Again, really liking this site ;)

died as in lock-up right;) .... your proc temp is very high. What is the cooling situation in your case?? Any fans and what HSF??

hi there shaftyPinochle, welcome to the forums!

Can you give us a bit more info? Like, what exactly are you doing when it crashes, and what OS are you using? Did you say you had to raise the voltage just to run it at default speeds?

First guess would be CPU overheating- it happens sometimes, overclocked or not. Be sure you have enough airflow thru your case. 52C is pretty high, is that at idle?
Second guess would be a faulty power supply- they can cause weird lockups and crashes as they start to die.

Both of those are pretty unlikely but worth checking out real quick just to rule them out.

Ok:

I am running XP. And ya, this is at idle that I am getting these temps.

I have the Zalman 5000 heat sink with the Delta Ultra 80mm fan. Puts out 80cfm.

Its in that Lian-li case, so fans a plenty.

thanks for help.

Rig a case fan over your HSF, I find that can lower CPU temp by a good few degrees C.

well, if its 52 at idle it could easily get to crash temperature under full load...my guess that you heatsink is not quite attached right or is otherwise not getting the job done. Is it at default voltage

Zalman? Are they not the quiet HSFs? Try a different HSF.

Hey again.

I am using the Zalman heat sink, but have attached the 60-80mm adapter & am using the Delta Ultra Fan (5700rpm, 80cfm)

But so far, cooling seems to be inadequate?

I am currently at max allowable Voltage, as comp would not boot when I had default voltage.

are you using artic silver or the thermal tape. Ensure that the HSF is making proper contact will the core. If you have the funds try out the thermalrght AX-7 HSF. You say you have cooling in the case besides the HSF.. you should consider what David suggested about the blowholes over the CPU. Also, what are your case temps??

Turn the voltage down a bit - voltage=heat.
Try 1.8v.

Ok folks - (knock on wood) but as of this minute, it seems that the lock-ups (shut-downs) were/are due to overheating.

I have added Arctic Silver II and temps have dropped 10C.

Thanks for the info guys.

END OF PROBLEM.
