Don't recall anything about the story when TLOUP1 came out, only the awful state of optimisation which they did fix over time. I'm not interested enough to compare, does the requirements differ from part 1? Assuming it supports it, think most will get a lot further than the specs suggest through upscaling.

Everyone loved the 1st one's story, it's the 2nd that was the big problem. Yeah, also hoping the optimization is a LOT better this time (also not depending on DLSS/FG to carry it), considering writer/dev already stated it's not likely to be a 3rd game...

I don't get much out of those styles of games, I can appreciate the art form, but suspense/horror/sneaking around monsters doesn't do it for me. IIRC the majority of the controversy was because the girl was gay and IIRC there was a trans person too? It was all that anti-woke BS that people would spout.

In either case, my wife and I do enjoy the TV series.

Not as far as I know, I mean, it was kinda obvious Ellie was gay/bi from the side story in the 1st game, and it was never really an issue. Getting into spoiler territory for whoever hasn't played it - the real problem is how Joel died, why he died, how the writer portrayed Abby and continually tries to manipulate the player throughout the game into liking her and hating Ellie and Joel. They keep putting a heavily pregnant woman in danger/fight scenes. Also, the fact that Joel's death depends on a massive coincidence. - They went for shock value instead of good story writing, in my opinion

Couldn't get too vested in it either, but I do remember that particular bit of online ranting, yeah.

I'm just a little surprised it got a remaster already. Wikipedia says part 2 came out in 2020 - I wouldn't say there were many groundbreaking tech improvements in the past few years...

That's true too, I think the way that is done and the back and forth/nature of the the villain also messed with the opinions of the game.

I misunderstood that part. I thought you meant the story in part 1. I know almost nothing about the series.

If we assume they use the same tech but drop in the story/assets of the 2nd, then can we assume it should perform similarly? This is with the post launch updates to part 1.

Yes and no, same graphics engine, assume updated DLSS and FSR and some small updates to texture quality which were the one of the main issues in p1, but they can now sort of mask the low FPS with FG, so...

"The Last of Us Part 2 PC Review - We're Disappointed - Analysis + Optimised Settings"

"On the plus side, the quality of the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2 is considerably improved over Part 1's disastrous launch. However, we've still got plenty of issues with this port: GPU performance is much lower than it should be compared to similar results from the 12-year-old PS4, CPU utilisation can be very, very heavy - and yes, there can be stuttering problems. Even beyond that, capping frame-rate for a smoother ride isn't as simple as it should be. Alex details the pros and cons of the conversion."

"Controversy"??! "Bad reviews"??

It's one of Sony's most successful games of all time (the original Last of Us Part II... don't remember about the remake...)

It got RAVE reviews when it came out and won multiple Game of the Year awards. As for anyone actually caring whether a character in a video game is gay or by... who cares about The Idiots of the Internet?

The game still sold a BAJILLION of copies.

There was a big controversy about the story, (read post 5) and yes it sold millions (for good or for bad games aren't just the story), but for contrast, part 1 sold ~30 million and part 2 only sold ~10 million (most of it during the 1st couple months, and then went to 40% discount, then 60% discount), not counting remaster, you can see for yourself the massive drop in interest. If we didn't care about internet opinions, we would be mindlessly consuming without any sort of information except what the companies/shills tell us - no thank you, i much rather hear from both sides and make my own mind up.

How is a 5.8 "rave reviews" ?

Tbf you're looking at user reviews and not critic reviews. User review scores are fairly easy to manipulate and bomb, especially any time you see that much of a difference from user to critic.

True, but on the other hand, critics are well known (and mostly well payed) shills, so high marks are to be doubted, just look at Dragonveil or any Disney product since the "Rey trilogy" (personally I make an exception of Andor and Skeleton Crew). As I said, I rather hear both sides, then watch and play and make my own assumptions.

So far, TLoU P2 looks amazing, no bugs except FG introducing stuttering and doing less than DLSS, 80fps-140fps most areas with DLSS Quality @1440p max settings. I can definitely tell when it's compiling shaders because the fans suddenly kick in hard (CPU goes to 100%), but mostly happens during cutscenes and doesn't seem to impact FPS, so big thumbs up there. But I'm still pretty early in the story, let's see what happens further along.

Spoke too soon, stutterfest in "Seattle day 1", especially in dark areas when I had to use my flashlight while searching the buildings, ALMOST completely gone when I went switched drivers from 572.16 to 572.83. Is it just me or there's no reload keybind? Been driving me mental...

TBH I'll be up for it...I played part 1 and loved it. Just started playing Silent Hill 2 PC remake. Since the late 90s I always give PC games about 6 months to get patched up. Now with all the different hardware out there and more complications - ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, Radeon or nVidia, just expect more to go wrong. Used to be DOS, X86, Sound-blaster & VGA graphics

6900XT overclocked and I'm getting about 50-65 FPS at 1440P Ultra HDR on Silent Hill 2. Looking at RDR2 should be about 80 FPS...

Ooooooooooooook, after completing the game I can safely join the mob in hatred of Abby, I have rarely seen a character so poorly written/thought out. She has one of those personalities you just love to hate, nearly every decision she makes is a crapfest to her and everyone around her, but (to me at least) somehow she doesn't feel evil per se, she's just... dumb... like low IQ stupid. The polar opposite of Ellie, if that makes more sense. I don't agree with every decision that Ellie ever made, but you can clearly see the suffering in every one of her actions/consequences, Abby would (and does) gleefully kill anyone and everyone that gets in her way to get what she wants, even with stabilizing influences around her (major props to Owen).

IMHO, the game would have been better off either without Abby or by having her doing something important in the background - to quote a redditor: "It would have been way more interesting for one of Joel's raid victims or their child to come back for revenge, since it was established in the first game that Joel used to be part of the raiders. Show Joel being utterly cruel and ruthless along with his brother Tommy in the beginning (remember the line "I have nightmares because of you!"); the first game already built up sympathy points for him, now's your chance to use them to build them up for another character. If Ellie was displayed in more of a psycho light, the game would have hit home its message much better as well. Rather than having Owen and Mel lunge for Ellie, make her shoot them out of anger because they said something insensitive, or maybe Ellie hears a WLF search party coming and just shoots them out of panic."

I would still like to know more about the Cordyceps infestation and what exactly happened to Ellie, I mean, the hints we get given in the 1st game and what happens in the TV series is quite different...

Overall, good game, solid 7/10, fun to play overall, amazing graphics, pulls on the emotional strings, keeps you arguing about its characters and story and wanting more (which is what it's supposed to do)

Sorry... took a bit of a hiatus. Can't even remember when this is from...

10 million is still a LOT of copies... especially for a sequel. It was probably still one of the top 5 best-selling games of that year.

It just so happens there are a subset of idiots out there that won't buy a game because it has Black people in it (Battlefield 1) or because one of the characters is gay (Last of us II). My point was: **** 'em.

Neither of those things determines whether or not it was a good or bad game. It's just an indicator of how well or poorly those people are adjusted to being part of a society.

And when you talk about "5.8"... that's just an average. Some ******* people also happen to be ******* reviewers. So if you've got 5 5-star reviews and three 0 star reviews... guess what happens.

Nevertheless... the game was nominated for 101 awards and won 48... including, as I said earlier, MULTIPLE "Game of the Year" awards.

And... as you yourself pointed out: It sold TEN MILLION COPIES.

I never even heard about any controversy until you mentioned it. (And I do own the Last of Us Part II and read a number of reviews before I bought it.)

Factually true, big controversy, tons of videos/reviews about it, you can look it up yourself. IMHO the story is bad regarding Abby specifically, but it had absolutely nothing to do with sexuality and/or color, I call it bad writing. That said, I can certainly relate to the bunch that thought she was trans because, you know, buff male body model with androgynous female head, but I never cared about it simply because I couldn't care less about it in real life either. Hell, when @Janus67 replied about it, I genuinely thought he was talking about Ellie. If it's a good character I'll play it, if it's a good actor I'll praise he/she/it. I shrugged it off as another DEI insert like Yasuke in AC:Shadows because I couldn't see a good explanation for why she is how she is (still can't), and continued playing  You are right, characters USUALLY don't make/break a game, but it definitely hurts (especially when you race/sex swap known characters), and the decisions you are forced to make with them definitely make a huge impact on how you perceive them. Imagine for a second that ND made the game with some player decision-making, like an RPG, how different the ending would have been for most players, from what I've seen online, everyone and their mothers would have killed Abby, the majority in the most brutal way the game offered. Or they wouldn't have played her at all, they would have continued with Ellie or Joel.

As I stated above, It IS a good game, but could have been a hell of a lot better if not for Abby and some other very peculiar character decisions (I still can't get around sending a heavily pregnant women in combat missions). Definitely NOT a 10/10 by any stretch.

Well no... I don't believe MOST games that get 10/10 ratings. (Also, I made a correction to my earlier post. I meant to write "one of the top 5 best-selling games of THAT YEAR" not "of all time".)

Truth be told... I haven't actually read anything you've said about the story (including what you just wrote) because I haven't even made it 10% through the game yet. :D

I started playing it when it became apparent that "Yeaaaaah... I better finish the first one first..." And I guess I better finish BOTH of them before I continue our conversation!

I've just been skimming through what was written here.

But I do remember people discussing... something... back when the game came out. It's entirely possible that I avoided what they were talking about back then as well... for the same reason. (Spoilers.)

So I'll withold judgement until I've got the full story.
