Well, decided to run seti on an old dual opteron board with 2 opteron 270s. I just realized it's taking ~17 hours to finish a WU. I know it's clocked higher (a little over 3.6ghz) and has a better architecture, but my q9550 can do a WU in under 2 hours. Is there really that big of a difference or should I start looking more into this?

In case it matters, the server is running ubuntu server 9.10, has 2GBs of ram, the CPUs aren't throttling or anything, and system manager shows that the WUs are the only things taking up CPU time.

Oh yeah, forgot to add, I'm running optimized apps on the q9550, but the server is running linux and just as I'm typing this I was looking around the lunatics site and just realizing now there is an optimized client for linux, thought it was windows only. I'll give that a shot.

With Windows I run about 5 hours / WU on the K8's - optimized, of course. ;)

IIRC my Linux rig running current optimizers (one year ago!) was taking 10-11 hours / WU on average and I know that got worse. Last October I shut it down because it was only making 400-500 RAC while my Windows K8's were still running 1100-1300, depending on speed. So, yeah, if the newest Linux optimizer is a year old or so then you'll get 12-14 hours / WU and 17/WU could be about right w/out an optimizer.

If you get better than that let me know. If a newer Linux optimizer works better I might fire up that rig again ... :)

occasionally you can also just get ones that take longer or an bad one, I just saw one that took 39.5 hours optimized cuda on my 260 obviously an error that only requested 85 credit

Bleh, just got around to trying to add them today. Had downloaded them to a flash drive right after Duner reminded me of the optimized apps, tried adding them today, for some reason it wouldn't let me get them off the flash drive, and now I can only find the linux astropulse optimized files on the lunatics site and not the basic optimization app. This is turning out to be more work than it's worth :(

If you're talking about the main optimizers you want the Win32 (or Win64) Lunatics' Unified Installer v0.2.

Here's our instructions for installation - they may have changed since you last did this ... :)

my link above has the multibeam linux apps too.

Yeah, I'll probably end up downloading those.

My bad.

Since I'm a Linux n00b I had a terrible time installing mine. I remember having to do something like create a new user group or something and giving it admin rights for SETI folders??? Arg, I can't remember - it's been awhile and like I said, I'm a n00b ... :-/

I'm kind of a noob at this also, I just figure if I get an extra 500-600 rac a day out of this thing I'll be happy.
