Too much power? not enough PSU?

Hello everyone,

I am building a new HTPC and the MAX powersupply I can get is 300 watt. It is a limitation of the case I am getting and I cannot switch the case because it is the look it ... needs. heh. You can view it here:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...1-126-119&catalog=7&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1

This is what I am throwing in it:

P4 2.4C
Asus P4C800E-Deluxe
Radeon 9800 Pro
200 Gig WD HDD
LG DVD rom
Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu
Akasa PaxMat
2 Quiet 60mm fans

I am not certain of memory at all, Speed or Capacity, could anyone give me some suggestions on what I should do. I am not sure if I will be overclocking this yet, but I really planned on it. I don't know how far I could possibly go though, considering the HSF, PaxMat, and low PSU.

Looking for help fellas. Thanks alot!

Well for an HTPC you really dont need all that cpu speed (unless you want to play games on your TV).

For memory as you wont be overclocking alot, heat will be the biggest concern, PC-3500 should be just dandy. Get 2 sticks (dual Channel kit or simply two sticks of the same stuff), as intels will vastly notice the increase in preformance for dual channel ram.

Also a ALl-In-Wonder video card is probably a better option for an HTPC as add in video capture cards take up space that is so precious in little cases.

Hey,

Thanks for replying so fast. I really don't need the AIW 9800 Pro, I already have one in another room connected to my TIVO that I use to record shows.

I do plan on playing PC games on this HTPC, so I guess I will see what I can do with it.

And should I get 512Mb or 1gig? Memory takes alot of juice. So I will probably have to get 512, though I would prefer 1 gig.

OH, I forgot to mention, this is going in the basement and the Ambient temp is around 55-60 F. So the PSU might be a tad more efficent.

Thanks again

Oh man.... I didn't think of that.

well, the zalman height is about 2 1/2 inches and the full case height is about 5.3 inches... It will probably be tight, but I think I could make it.

That TOTALLY didn't come to mind at all. Thats why it is always good to talk to other people.

So 512 or 1024MBs?

Even if you get the ps and heatsink figured out, you're going to have to figure a way to cool that case down quiet a lot. And I don't think you're gonna do that by adding case fans. You'll have a lot of heat in a very small case!

Cheers,
Mike
