Trouble with new RAM (or BIOS?)

Hm, ok, ill try that. I know that it has been 1066, and i have wondered why i couldnt choose 1333, lets see what happens :)

Ok, adjusted the FSB strap and FSB frequency to 333 on both of them, that gave me the DRAM freq of 1333, timings are still 7-7-7-24, and DRAM cmd rate set on 2T. Gonna upload a pic so you can see. Voltages are also the same, at 1.64 DRAM and 1.35 North bridge

+ i forgot to tell you that it failed, but this time when i boot, it shuts down due failed overclocking. Booting up again after the fail gives me the F1 F2 options, yet bios hasnt been reset

picture of the OC that failed... wierd that this is considering overclocking, when the RAM is supposed to be 1333 Mhz normally. Fishy fishy

+ tried to see if there were any wierd lightings in my cabinet because i got some LED indicators, noticed that the SB LED started blinking green and then turned green, while the other lights were green from the start. does the south bridge have anything to do with DRAM and bios working together? saw this pic on wikipedia so just wondering. maybe thats a problem.

Adjusting the FSB frequency is also overclocking the CPU... ;)

You won't need to adjust the FSB Frequency, just the strap.

Then there will be several different settings (ratios) to choose from on the DRAM Frequency setting.

Each time you change the Strap, there will then be different DRAM Frequencies based on different ratios.

Change the FSB Frequency back to 200, then go on and adjust the strap and subsequently the DRAM Frequency till you find the one that comes out to 1333 or right around there.

Start with the 200 Strap, then see what options you have for DRAM Frequency, Then move to the next strap and check again. Eventually you'll find the correct strap and ratio. :)

One of the guys who has the strap ratios memorized may be able to come in and tell you the exact settings... Otherwise you'll just have to do it by process of elimination.

gonna show you some new pictures. my problem is that, i cant get and DRAM freq over 804 without adjusting the FSB freq*.... i dont know why :/ these pictures will show you

the FSB strap to NB i can choose are 200, 266, 333, and 400

OK... We'll keep working on it.

If I have too I'll go fire up my REX and figure out exactly what Strap and Ratio you need... It'll be later this evening though.

I'll wait on your pics. :)

Try the one on the 200 strap with the ratio that equals 667.

667 x 2 = 1334

It's weird that your board is working with the Single Data Rate numbers... BUT... It might be whats going on.

Give the 200 strap a shot with the 667 setting a try and report back.

just tried it out, "DET DRAM" on the lcd poster, damn :p i get my hopes up each time, haha... though this BIOS is in fact from 2007, so who knows what kind of numbers it uses

+on the right hand side in bios it says that it might not boot with freqs under 800, just thought of that
+(2) comp hasnt shut down yet due anything, its still running.... seems that it might be too underclocked now, or it is working, and i am experiencing what i am when i dont change bios settings at all

Alright... We've just got to be missing something.

Give me a couple hours here to finish up my work for the week, and I'll go get my board fired up and we'll try to work it out.

Have you also looked to make sure you've got the most updated BIOS?

We may want to go ahead and knock that out of the way if not.

i know this might be a wierd thing to say, but my bios is from 2007, and the lates bios updates are 2009. i was going to flash the bios and all, but the ASUS utilities would not work with my system, which i downloaded for exactly the Maximus Extreme. though if you are confident enough to take me through a safe method i could probably try :/ but yeah... considering the booting problems i dont know :p

all ive read about biosflashing is that you do it when it is absolutely necessary, and i didnt have this problem before i got the new RAM, so i figured it was the RAM. But as i said above, if you know a safe way, i am open for options :)
i guess i can stay up a while for help :3:bday:

Do me a favor and take a pic of the BIOS Screen under Tools.

I think the Maximus should be pretty similar to my REX in updating the BIOS, and if so... I could even do a livestream later tonight to show you how to quickly update the BIOS.

Doing it THROUGH the BIOS is in my opinion a better alternative to using the "tools" to do it through Windows.

EDIT: I apologize that I haven't been more help so far... I'm thinking at this point though that theres either a BIOS issue, or some other kind of compatibility issue we aren't seeing.

Just for fun... Have you tried putting your old RAM back in and verifying that the board still operates normally with it in place and everything back on Auto?

If you are thinking about the EZ flash 2 thingy, yupp i got it :3 but i just dont want anything to go wrong :p have used enough moneh already

Easy Flash is a cakewalk! ;) And safer than doing it through Windows.

Like I said... If you're around later tonight... I'll flash mine on Livestream so you can watch and see what you're getting into.

It's really a simple deal if you have a USB thumb / flash drive.

Go ahead and download the latest BIOS revisions for your board...

And later tonight if you're around I'll walk you through how to do it.

If you're not around... I'll make a video and upload it to Youtube for ya.

I have never been able to operate my computer with Auto settings with the old ram, considering its MHz of 1600... I have been needing to overclock for it to work, but for some reason, all i had to do then was to use the CPU lvl up function, and so i got my CPU and DRAM freq, FSB freq, and strap automatically adjusted i guess... so putting old rams inn, i have tried, yet not with the old settings.... though i have to get an assignement due 23:00 GMT +1 :p so gonna focus on that for the next 15 min

sounds sweet :D

nvm, turned out to get kind of late here in Norway... gonna sleep now, but hope you can help tomorrow !

NEVERMIND, just updated it, you were right, it was really easy :p went into bios, saved and exited, and computer booted up (hurray!). Ill see to the other "problem" about the RAM other times, this needs celebration! restarting comp now to check stuff :>
