There was some discussion in another thread regarding using UT in
software rendering mode to compare the Tualatin processors.
We will need to use the same demo and procedures for valid
results. Any suggestions for changes or alternatives to
the below are welcome.

I found a demo file to use for UT timedemos. (See attached file)

Below are some results for the P3-S at 1471mhz. 154fsb Gigabyte XET-c board.
Gainward Gf3 Ti450 64mb Golden Sample. Not overclocked.
(Overclocking this card seems to make no difference in UT anyway...)

All tests with High details, 32 bit color, decals/lighting on and
0 selected for Min desired FPS in the preferences window.

After selecting the software rendering, I also disabled the sound.
UseSound : FALSE (under Advanced Options/Rendering/D3D Support,
which can be accessed by typing in "preferences" at the console)
You need to restart UT for that to take effect.

Instructions for running the timedemo are in the zip file.
** Hit tab and enter the "demoplay wicked405" command at that
prompt, and you wont have to worry about getting the console
window out of the way.

Here are some numbers:

---- Min FPS --Max FPS --Ave FPS

640x480 - 38.17 -51.20 - 44.56
800x600 - 28.57 - 37.38 - 32.80
1024x768 - 19.62 - 24.93 - 22.17
1280x1024 -13.09 - 16.11 - 14.56
1600x1200 - 9.39 - 11.43 - 10.41

Here are some for OpenGL and D3D rendering for compare:

OpenGL
1024x768 - 49.75 - 109.94 - 77.21
D3D
1024x768 - 46.87 - 110.49 - 79.51

I also ran all the above tests with the video card overclocked to
215/544 from the default 200/450 with almost no difference in results
at all, which is what we want I believe.

The ave fps went up 2.8fps for OpenGL, and 0.04fps for D3D scores above.

If there is any interest, I could set my 1.1a to a 134fsb for 1474
and run the same tests to compare to the P3-S at 1471.

It would be more fair if the two were running the same FSB and same clock. Then we could see something regarding IPC. I have shown in the other thread that a 1.2cel-t running 100fsb cannot even compete witha cel-t 1GHz /133fsb. THe 1GHz cel-t will run 30 or so FPS more that the 100fsb 1.2cel-t.

But the cel-t running 1GHz/133fsb was about 5fps behind the PIII-s 1.13GHz running UT. The PIII-s had a 133MHz speed difference too which would give about 1~2fps I would guess in UT. Here check them your self. At higher resolutions the difference may not be as apparent also.

Benchmarking with UT

how does the memory benchs look for the two processors?
And is there any big time difference in game starting times.

I just scored a 1004/996 in sandra 2001 mem bench with
everything running. (Celly @1474, 134fsb)

The P3-s will score maybe 100-150 points higher, at 150fsb....

I dont know if it is the 815chipset, or the XET boards, but it
seems as if memory performance stalls out around 133 or
so. I have tried Crucial, OCZ and Kingmax TinyBGA with
both of these chips, and get approx. the same results with
any combo. So I just tried to match up the P3-s with the
ram that was the most stable at high fsb's.

Not sure if others have the same experience or not.
Mostly I try to ignore the memory benchmarks since the
DDR and rambus scores kick my butt so badly.....:p :D :argue:

after i install UT ill run the benchies as u outlined them 6502 kid at the speed its at now and at the speed clocked down to the p3/celly''s speed.
just 4 comparisons sake
ol man, run the benchies exacxtly as he has specified so we can put the "celly is better than XP" thing to bed for good without your 4yr old benchie. I outdid funnyperson1's superpi score at the same clock speed to 1m numbers like this(i dont remember exactly, i believe this is correct, if not it gives hin the advantage):
[email protected]=1min47sec
[email protected]=1min07sec
in CPUmark i beat him by 25pts, 125/150 both at 1400mhz. I believe these differences easily go beyond ddr vs sdram.
same as this UT bench will, although i wont be able to post the results till 2morrow night(my boy gets outta jail today i havent seen him 4 a year) and i have to work
Happy benching:)

1024x768x32: 18.93fps
1280x1024x32: 12.92fps

You ran a very high FSB. I told you super pi is totally dependant on the FSB of your computer. I will score the same as one running 1.6GHz/150fsb.

can someone PLEASE tell me why we still insist on running gaming demos for benches on the CPU? Everyone of you will beat my little ATI Rage Fury vid card, with your GeForce cards...regardless of my clock speed, memory, etc... :eh?:

no you see this is with Software rendering which means that the Video card is only used for display and the cpu does all the calculations....
