Ok guys, i need some help here as this problem is preventing the overclocking of my system, because when it isn't totally stable at normal settings, i worry. :)

I had a kt7-raid from which i upgraded to kt7a-raid. On the old mobo the cpu had no problems operating at 109 x 7 with various bios features on (such as enhance chip performance, force 4 way interleaf and enable dram 4k-page mode all on)
(i never tried past a fsb of 109)
I have a globalwin fop 38 (hang on im getting to the problems)

If i enable these fairly "standard" improvements the system locks up in windows while playing counter strike, resulting in a need to reboot... and this happens on a fairly regular basis. with these features turned off it freezes but with nowhere near the frequency...
also, sometimes while running, such as loading windows, netscape, icq or other programs it freezes for about 20 seconds after which point it continues to operate "normally" i found this odd... i tried to overclock the system at it boots into windows fine at 133 x 7 ... although counterstrike crashes with an error when loading...

the cpu temperature in the via hardware monitor has never reached over 39C...
ooh, also sometimes during the temporary 20 second lockups if i move the mouse, the hard drives (in a raid 0 array on the same ide cable) create a buzzing noize which i find odd again...

the possible problems that i have thought of as of yet are: raid array difficulties and maybe formatting and having the drives on separate cables would help
or a heat problem, (too much artic silver between the core and heatsink) (i may have gone overboard)
im waiting to test these theories out because the system still works and i need the system for school (just 2 more weeks) after which point i shall try cleaning the cpu/heatsink and reapplying the thermal grease
im just looking for any possible ideas as to what else might be causing the problem/s
if more details are required about system i shall reply with anything necessary...

thanks in advance (sorry if the post is long and disjointed)

Steve:

1) Did you fdisk, reformat and reload windows when switching boards?

2) Do you have the latest BIOS update installed?

ya i fdisked
no i haven't updated the bios
(never updated a bios before)

What kind of cpu do you have, and how fast is it running? Your memory speed, is it at 100mhz or 133? What kind of mem do you have? Cpu unlocked?

its a 700 mhz athlon, runnin at 7 x 10, memory speed is 100mhz i have two 128mb sticks of pc 133 Micron / Infineon ram (problem was still existant with only one stick) and the cpu is not unlocked.

, the hard drives (in a raid 0 array on the same ide cable) create a buzzing noize which i find odd again.......................................................
you should have the other HDD on another controller I almost want to guess your slowing your posible increase in speed way down............... the thermal paste should all get squished out from under the HS and try unlocking that chip post your hardware in your sig

I think it likely that you have a dud board.......... I've had the same kind of problems with mine + one extra, PCI slot 3 doesn't work properly (see my post about it).

I thought it was either the oc'ed Duron or the SB!Live problem, but now I've finally tracked the prob to the mobo when I tried actually using slot 3.

The PCI slot problem is probably not connected, but if that can get past factory testing it's highly likely that my other mobo problem/your mobo problem has too.............

ok thanks for the tips guys

arg when i bought the board the first time it wouldn't get past hard drive detection i spent a few days struggling with it, i took it back to the store and it worked fine for them, both raided and non raided... they gave me a diff board and it booted fine...its one weird thing after another
