After editing fan power connections and redoing too many times, took a break to get a better plan together, just decided to let things sit for a while and think. Still needed to power some 120's for a rad though and rather than make a permanent install I hooked them like this....

wire the 120's to a wall block transformer. 2 x .25A 120s spin like they are on a 7v line with a 200mA transformer. I think the one I have rigged is from an old portable phone but most people have at least a half dozen of these from various sources and can be used to run all kinds of stuff if you don't want to load you PS.

it may not be much but these could be rigged in a bank of three or so to power all fans and/or other stuff to help a marginal power supply.
 
works nice huh.

last PS that went bad blew a hole in a harddrive chipset, patched it up with some plumbers goop but it was never the same. LOL.
