Unsafe surfaces for PC parts?

Are there surfaces that aren't safe for exposed parts to rest upon? My father told me that it was unsafe to leave a RAM chip on wood, so I'm just suspect of what other surfaces aren't safe.
 
Err, wood is fine. Building on metal can offer a slight risk, but a piece of cardboard over it negates that. As a side note, car batteries are fine on concrete, too.
