happy new year to all team 32

just read some news on yor mad cows over there in the us and thought this little snipet my be of interest to the group

"Formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, ."mad cow disease is caused by misshaped proteins called prions . It is fatal and can be spread by eating contaminated meat. The human variation of the disease is blamed for at least 137 deaths, mostly in Britain

yea, they traced the infected cows to canada. i work in the meat dept of my local grocery store and everyone has been asking me about it.

Prions are infectious proteins. Simpler than virii, and yet they hijack a cell's machinery and replicate themselves much like virii do.

Just another reason to feel good about folding, although I doubt our computers are really doing any work to exactly prevent that disease. Maybe if we finish these up, we can get to work on others.

If you look at the big picture however, 137 dead from mad cow disease is nothing compared to the 200-300 million people infected with malaria each year. And malaria isn't very nice to get either, although the survival rates are much higher.

I shake a stick at you, canadian farmers! If it wasn't yer fault.........
Actually, I don't think anyone can really be blamed for what mother nature throws at us, but what can be blamed for is people's reaction to it. Stopping beef imports from the US or anywhere is ridiculous for that matter. What are they going to do next, ban imports from China because some people over there caught sars last year?

I for one don't mind that other countries have stopped importing from the US. It gives the officials time to get a firm grasp on the whole thing. Once it is all straightened out, things should go back to normal. If all it takes is a pause in production to regain confidence in the food supply, then so be it. I did my part and ate a Big Mac today.

Fold on.

don't give canada the credit for bse

no it was ours

not one of our better exports i must say

You can only get it if you get part of the brain or spinal cord I think... so if they mess up processing a cow that happens to be contaminated. Thats just what I heard though - don't quote me on that until someone knows for sure.

If the brain or spinal cord comes in contact with any other meat, as when it is being pulled out (ugh) it can infect other tissues. Plus, what part do you think burger king gets its meat from? Too bad cooking it doesn't kill the prions, if they can be considered "alive."

Good thing I don't eat a Burger king (or any other crappy fast food restaurunt) :p

Some scientists think they are alive and some don't ... some even thing they are the "missing link" in the evolutionary chain between actual life and no life.

i live in a CANDAIAN farming community in Alberta our town is GREATLY hurt by all of this cause all our buyers are farmers and they have no money any more cause of this....it sucks :/
