I have a Toshiba Infinia 7260 with an Intel PD440FX mobo. I would like to upgrade it with an ABIT Slotket III. Is this possible?

If yes, how do I determine what processor to install? So far it seems that the Celeron 533A or better is the way to go. Is that right?

Thank you.

its not possible... it is very hard to find a 440BX chipset board that can support a Coppermine(celeron or p3)...the 440FX chipset was a P Pro chipset

you can likely use a PPGA celeron though which go as high as 533...(if it's a P-Pro processor..then you will need a powerleap adapter)

the 533A is a coppermine core as is everthing else higher than that

Update:

from Intel's website

Intel® PD440FX Motherboard
Processors Supported

The motherboard only supports Pentium® II processors that run internally at 233, 266, 300 and 333 MHz and have a 512KB L2 cache supporting ECC or non-ECC operation.

Special instructions must be observed when using 333 MHz Pentium II processors.

While the Intel® Celeron™ processor uses the same P6 microarchitecture as the Pentium II processor, but there are some differences. No qualification or compatibility testing has been performed using the Celeron processor and the BIOS does not contain support for this processor. No additional BIOS upgrades are planned for the PD440FX motherboard. While the Celeron processor may appear to work in a PD440FX board, the reliability of operation is not known.

Warning: Processors not specifically listed by type and rated speed may have requirements that are not supported by the motherboard's design. Use of unsupported processors may result in improper operation, damage to the motherboard or processor, or reduced product life.

Thank you for your help.

I know someone who has tried exactly what you mentioned and it worked.

does anyone have any idea how to set the jumpers on this baby?

I've installed the slotkey + PPGA Celeron 500 into it but the pc is not powering on. I get some hard drive activity but that's about it.

The voltage jumper setting only allow (according to the website) 3.5 (for 233mhz) , 4.0, 4.5 & 5 for (333). What do I need to do to get it to use the 500mhz cpu?

The multiplier is locked on the celeron chip and will override the setting on the board. I think that any multiplier setting on the motherboard that will let it boot up will be ok.

So I guess I need to try all 16 different settings and hope that at least one of them boots up?

I did some playing around a bit and discovered that one of the jumpers set the FSB to 66 or 60, and the other three set the vcore from X2 to X5.5

Dumb question.....

I'm attempting to upgrade my neighbor's old box. (gave me full permission to play Dr. Frankenstein with it). It's an intel 440fx mobo with pIIx3 Southbridge. It has a PII 266 (slot 1) right now, I got a 300/66 celeron to work perfectly, I also got a 400/66 celeron to work (so-so). when it boots the 400, I get an error saying: "cannot activate cache...... DO NOT ENABLE CACHE......... press <ESC> to continue booting <F1> for setup or <F2> for opion roms."
When I enter setup I can't seem to find any way to disable the cache.
so, my questions
1. Is there a way to disable it? if so, how?
2. If not, will it do damadge to the machine to just hit <ESC> and continue booting?

Any ideas?
