You guys think it's worth upgrading my opteron 146 (at 2.4Ghz) to a opteron 175/180?

I've checked Toms CPu database thing, and comparing a 4000+ san diego (2.4Ghz) to a FX-60, yields only a +15%-30% increase in fps....

I use the comp mostly for internet and games (NWN, NWN2, Oblivion, CIV4...).

BTW: My complete system is in my sig.

...seems kind of pointless...? I'm thinking it's better if i wait till next fall/winter with current rig and upgrade then to Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD (if they got something good by then) and also change the video card then too... And just upgrade my monitor now to the Dell 2407...???

BTW: I'd only oc the cpu to 240fsb...(2.6Ghz for Opteron 180; 2.4Ghz for 175)

Well if you dont really multi task I dont see any point , Duals are very nice and im glad I got mine but can I ask a question y do you only have that opti @ 2.4 vs 2.9-3.2 it can do ?

Why? I have the same board as you... well... see my sig... that would be my recommendation.

I know it can do more...at least 2.6Ghz anyways...never bothered going for more just so I can get a 5% fps increase - to me that means didly squat (spelling?).

According to Toms CPU database:

...........................CofD 2 @ 1024.......Fear @1280.......Serious Sam 2 @1024
2.4Ghz 1Mb cache ........110.....................48......................82
2.8Ghz 1Mb cache ........120.....................55......................88

(Using 1900XTX and x2 150Gb raptors)

.....So the point of 2.8Ghz vs 2.4??? Worthless to increase it to that, especially since I use 7900gt (550/1630) not a 1900XTX 512Mb card. Most of you will probably think an extra 10fps is worth it--- but is it really when you're already at 110?!? (using CofD 2)

10FPS is a lot... Like going from 45 to 55 is a noticable difference. It's not only the FPS increase it's the total memory bandwidth too man.

What do you mean about the ram bandwidth? If you game fps goes from 45-55... isn't that the "bottom line"? Or is there something else I'm not thinking about? (I know what memory bandwidth is - higher = better... but if it goes up 10fps, that's all there is, right?)

And 45-55 fps being a lot.... it's all in the eyes of the beholder.....now 25-45 IS noticeable....And I know if I were to go out and get a 8800GTS right now, yes, then I would for SURE upgrade the cpu as it then would be the bottleneck.... but using a 7900gt, isn't a 2.4/2.6Ghz 1Mb cpu pretty much the max before things get bottlenecked?

I think i'll keep it a while longer.... got my eye on 24" monitor right now instead...

Yeah i think thats the better upgrade.I want a new monitor Bad and a new keyBoard..(My w button on my keyboard is starting to fail ..lol i have to smash it to get it to work)
