When do you guys decide to stop bothering with upgrades and start saving for a new rig? Really, you can pretty much avoid buying a new computer indefinately by upgrading your major components from time to time. What do you do? Just curious.

eventually, after enough upgrades you'll have left over parts to build another computer.......I think the upgrade route is better then just saving for a new computer.....IMO

I think it's all personal preference. Depends on what you want, when you want it, how much money you have, new product availabilty, etc...I think very few people could set a set time limit for upgrading.

well it seems like after you are done upgrading, you will be left with a bunch of outdated parts without accessories (case, keyboard, mouse, etc) which you will have to buy in order to get a build a new (well, not new) comp. So it comes out about the same I think. Maybe the only advantage of upgrading is that you dont have to buy all your parts at the same time and thus you might be able to get a better deal.
Just trying to argue...

Just as a general rule, you can upgrade untill the newest processor wont work with ur MoBo. The it's time to start over!

BTW, I have a lot of fun with my old PC's :) When I have enough spare parts and end up with what I had + the new version, I usually find somekinda project for the old box.

For instance: A PC hooked up to a amplifier is the best music system u will ever have!

Old PC's make great answering machines: "Press button #1 if you wanna leave a message, Press button #2 if you ... etc"

I have a dedicated PC for the 'Net (500 mhz K6) which is cool because when I walk in the house I get to see "New Mail" sign ;)

You can have a PC turn the lights on off as per schedule, and run other electrical apps as desired.

A old PC always has a new life!

my computer is always in a state of upgrading. i only built my computer once with all new parts, it's easier for me to upgrade one ot two things at a time then it is to just save up for a while new set up. plus there's things that rarely need upgrading like NIC's and soundcards (if you get a good soundcard it will last for years... can't say that about processors or videocards. nics only need to be replaced when they break or upgrading your entire network).

I upgrade parts almost every 3-4 months. By then all the new stuff has come out and it is in the "affordable" price range. Thats really only Mobos, Ram, and Proc. everything else if you buy a quality part will last long. Ex. Case, PS, GPU, Sound Card, HD. I just sell all my old stuff to pay for the new, instead of accumulating parts and building another pc.
