I just finished my new rig... (specs and pics to come) the only thing that I'm having trouble with is the modem... yes thats the only connection device I can use at home. The modem is a Creative Labs V.92 56K, it installed with out a problem in Windows2k Pro and AOL detects it. However, no program will let it dial out. It clicks like it is trying to but never does. The only other modem I can try isn't supported by win2k. I have tried different COM ports and PCI slots. So I'm at another dead end.

do you get any error messages? Like error 601, 691? it just clicks? no dialtone? you may try upgrading the firmware.

No it reports as functioning correctly... and by firmware do you mean drivers?

I think that ashenfang is getting at the phone line. Do you get an error that says 'no dial tone'? It could be the line to your wal jack that is not plugged in correctly or working properly. Check that out and see what happens.

No it is not the line. With the line attached to the modem I can still get dial tone at my fax which is also attached to the modem. And I can dial out with my other computer using the same line. Can a modem die... it was working perfectly in my old rig.

what version of windows was the other rig running? Firmware is kinda like a "bios" Almost all computer parts have firmware. Check with the modem manufacturer and see if there is any upgrades available. It sounds like you have an incompatibility between the modem and the physical mobo or windows.

The other rig was dual booting with win98se and win2kpro and the modem would dial out with both of those. On the new rig win2kpro says the device is functioning properly. I found a Creative driver update for win2000 I will try that and report back.

You have to be getting some kind of message when you dial. Don't you? If so, what is it?

bump and update. I tried the drivers from the Creative website with the same results. Any more ideas?

Describe exactly what happens when you try to dial into AOL. Does the modem connect and go through the TCP handshake (makes all the weird tones) and then doesn't do anything after that? Or does it dial and nothing ever picks up on the other end of the line?

I was running into a problem w/ AOL a couple of weeks ago when I was installing a fresh version of XP. The modem would dial and 'connect' to AOL but would never get past the part where it tries to download your local numbers. If this is the case, try uninstalling AOL and get new disk from a different store. I know it sounds stupid, but it worked for me. For some reason my CompUSA disk wouldn't connect. Then I tried a Circuit City disk, and it worked fine.

I mentioned in the first post that I have tried more than one PCI slot with the same results. As far as AOL, it is 9.0 which worked on my old rig with out any difficulties. It says dialing in for acess numbers, it is a window with a keypad. It just keeps trying to dial out over and over, it never picks up the line, however, hyperterminal and other windows programs do the samething. I might go pick up another modem and give it a shot.

From what you're describing, it sounds like you are experiencing the exact same problem I was having. It would keep dialing out and it seemed like AOL never picked up, and then it would go back to the screen and say "AOL needs more information". Then repeat the same process over and over.

It got me so PO'ed that I called AOL thinking they would just walk me through the troubleshooting I had already done, and the guy did, but after that he told me that this was not a unique problem and there was a bug in the software when trying to download local numbers.

If I were you, I'd try uninstalling and getting a different disk and try repeating the process before you buy a new modem.

hmm i think it could the phone jack, how old are the phone lines (how old is the house). and it could be your account on aol, but i doubt that about aol account

Ok I fixed the problem... bad news it cost me 20 bucks and a new modem. Dang Creative and their junk.
