USB 2.0 - WinXP - Via chipset - ...non-HI-SPEED port

I have been trying to get my USB 2.0 working for a couple days now
with no success. I was wondering if you guys could help me out a bit.

I have the ABIT NV7-133R motherboard with integrated USB 2.0 (VIA
VT6202 chipset).

I have fully updated Windows XP Pro (via windows update) and update
bios. I have tried reinstalling SP1 using the network installation
(not express install). I have tried updating chipset and USB drivers
off abit's web site. I have also tried uninstalling everything and
rebooting to let XP re-install everything. I have also tried tweaking
bios settings as suggested on a usb web sites.

I can not get my external USB hard drive to connect via USB 2.0; it
works fine on other computers.

I get two errors when I try to connect

1st Error
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and
Windows does not recognize it.

- USB Root Hub (4 ports)
Unused Port
Unused Port
Unknown USB Device (Yellow question mark)
Unused Port

2nd Error
The USB Mass Storage Device is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function
at reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port.

- VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller
- USB Root Hub (4 ports)
Unused Port
Unused Port
Unused Port
Unused Port


In device manager I have
2: Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
2: VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Companion Controller
1: VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller (driver version 5.1.2600.0)

They enclosure connects through one of the VIA Rev 5 controllers.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on?

recheck where your header is plugged into the board

Confirmed... It is plugged into the correct plug.

Thanks, I have already been through that site a couple times... He had good suggestions on removing COM and Parallel ports to free up some IRQ’s. I also tired his bios tweaking suggestions with no luck.

Does anyone have USB 2.0 working properly on XP Pro on this mobo?

I am not a USB expert, but it seems to me the first error I get is the USB 2.0 controller erroring out, the second messages I get is the USB 1.1 controller (VIA Rev 5) connecting at a slow (non-USB 2.0) speed.

Stupid question, but have you tried the old way of updating the drivers through device manager itself (right click, update driver)?

Not a stupid question... more of a loaded question.

Just trying to get a feel for the type and frequency of problems with getting the USB 2.0 to work on the NV7 mobo.

And yes I have tried updating the driver via right click/update driver.

My best guess at this point is a malfunctioning mobo or an issue with my external hard drive drawing too much power through the USB. I really don’t know much about insufficient power issue I just read it while scouring the news groups. If I can get my hands on a usb 2.0 device I will test. Other than that I am pretty much at a dead end.

hm, having the same problem with my NF7-S. I tried about 4 different USB devices and all of them gives the same error (error #1). This is really driving me ape****, I cannot connect any USB device to my computer. I hope someone has a solution very soon.

USB 2.0 problems

Same problem here.
I have an older system with usb 1.1 ports, MSI K7T Turbo.
I purchased a Koutech NEC chip USB 2.0 pci card. I can only get my Western Digital 80 gig USB 2.0 to work on the 1.1 ports, at the reduced rate. Same errors as stated above "unknown device" on usb 2.0.

Update:

I only have this problem under WinXP.
I have win98se on a second HD in my system. After loading the drivers for the pci usb 2.0 card and the Western Digital usb HD, it works like a charm.

Western Digital has no drivers for winxp, its supose to work on its own.

Finally fixed my problem under winXP.

I had to manually update the NEC driver in winXP. When I ran the driver install from the disk that came with the pci card, it just put the drivers in the windows/drivers directory. WinXP had asigned Its MS driver to the hardware. After manually changing to the "Not digitally signed" driver, we have success.
