Not sure if anyone cares or not, but I just was on Fileplanet and got a beta key (I'm not a subscription paying member) so yeah I guess grab them while you can. Wanted to test the game out anyway see if it is as bad as everyone says lol.

Saying a game sucks based on beta is stupid. It's not a free demo, it's beta.
Beta=not done yet/still working out bugs.
I've been beta testing since open beta and I gotta say, they are making leaps and bounds in terms of fixes and optimizations.
They've patched the game at least once a day, if not twice.
It's really shaping up.

Agree

I have been in beta since 3.0. While the game is getting rushed to release, they have been making huge strides the last month. Game play is getting better by the day. Right now, even with a high end machine you have to play with the settings to get smooth gameplay. However if you look at my sig, you see I am playing on a 478/533mhz processor and have fined tuned it so I can play on medium/balanced settings. Out adventuring is fine, cities are still hard on my computer.
FFA PvP is fun, the world is very big. Crafting is interesting. I haven’t gotten into diplomacy. Hopefully the game will survive the first 6 months. I think they will have a good game after some additional POST release tweaking.

well, Vanguard is looking like it might be very much so worth my time. have only played the first few levels, but i have liked it enough to decide to play it post release

I would like to play the beta but a 6gig download would take way to long a VZ 14.99 a month DSL connection. If I preordered the game does a copy come with the pre order so you can install it and play the beta?

The hardcore croud they are trying to capture is what turns me off. I hate WoW but I still play since I can actually do things in the game without being left out or left behind. I can only play maybe 10 hours a week at most. Personally, I don't see the real advantage of playing the game when it looks very much like a EQ2 clone but with crap graphics.

thanks for the heads up, I registered inline at fileplanet....he should try to get together in game and play...Do you have to be on the same server like in WoW?

I agree I did think this looked alot like EQ2....but I liked EQ2..except I really hate it's experience debt system....thats what made me stop playing and go over to WoW in the first place.

Yes.

This game isn't as "hardcore" as people think. It's not EQ1 hardcore. EQ1 was a raiding game. This is more of everything, with primary focus on grouping.
Example of content: Solo 20%, group 60% AND 20% raid content.
The problem with a MMO that focuses soley on soloing, is you solo all the way to lvl cap and then are forced to group at the end game(eg WoW).
Soloing isn't good practice for end game raiding/grouping.
This is an MMO. That's what it's for is playing with others. Sure, you can solo to fill in time gaps or when you have a half hour or hour to spare. But grouping is what this game is about. It's not for everyone.
As for the graphics, they are better than EQ2. Maby not the detail in the models, but everything else is much better.
I play the beta and can attest to this. Have you?
As for the EQ2 clone part, obviously you haven't played it.
And if you play 10 hours a week, that's plenty for this game. It's not nearly as tedious as eq1 was/is.
Hardcore doesn't mean crawling xp anymore(like eq1). It just means more challenge and more reward. You won't lvl as fast as wow, but it isn't a crawl like eq1 either.

If you quit eq2 just because of xp debt, then you won't like this game.
If you want an easy game that'll run on any system and you like to play by yourself, then WoW is for you.
I personally can't pay $15 a month to play a solo/single player game.

This game isn't for everyone and the devs know that. They aren't trying to compete with WoW. They just want to make a fun and challenging game and so far I love it.

well I found less and less time to spend on EQ2...and with the debt if I died it just encouraged me to turn it off and wait until tomorrow to play when the debt was gone because I'd just spend the rest of my night to get my XP debt worked off.

BTW for anyone interested this download is 6.6gig

I have tried downloading this twice and the first attempt the download stalled at 79% so I restarted it when I went to bed...and woke up to find a corrupt archive...thanks fileplanet! 3rd tries a charm maybe.

How much longer will the open beta be running for? Will you be able to keep your character from the open beta once the game goes live?

I have been in since Beta2, back in Fall of 2005. I was also a 5 year eq1 player and Beta'd EQ2 and played for a couple years on and off. WoW never sounded right for me, and the fact it looked like cartooney Nintendo 1.0 graphics, I steered clear. Most EQ players, that played WoW, played for 3 months, maxed out and got bored and came back to EQ1 or moved on to EQ2.

Vanguard is vastly different to all of them and you should give the open beta a try if you have the chance.

I just wanted to comment to above poster as a warning. The Fileplanet download has been crappy and buggy. I tried it many times and ended up with corrupt / stalled downloads. Eventually when Vanguard moved to SOE (Sony) hosting their client, you could download the entire game via the game patcher .exe and my Beta account was tied directly to my Station Pass (EQ accounts) from sony.

The fileplanet download is 6G initially, then you fire it up and the game will patch again for a full install of over 15G! The game is massive and the entire download is just a behemoth. You've been warned...

Geez....15gb...I think it's bad when a game starts getting around 5gb.

Playing Beta right now and the game is tons of fun, I'm sure but the game is extremely buggy and the graphics engine they're using blows because the system specs are so high yet the graphics aren't exactly "groundbreaking". Good, but not enough to justify how much they're asking for out of a system. I'm hardly getting 25FPS on the field and roughly 8-12FPS in the town. Severely disappointing, and I was really anticipating this game too.

Guess I'll have to wait for WAR or possibly LOTRO.

Most games of the genre (cant speak of WoW) are massive. EQ1 has to be around 8G+ with 10 expansions (my last count)! EQ2 has to be pushing 10G with its 2 expansions.

So, the next gen MMO using 15G+ isnt a suprise at all.
