I had to see what all the hype was about. Is this card worth $400+? Well I pulled one of the shelf at the shop (EVGA) and in it went. I kept my XP2000+ at stock levels to get a fair comparision.

1st test was at stock speeds on the Vid card.

150mhz x 325mhz according to powerstrip

Compare here

2nd is with the max stable overclock of the GPU and memory on the Vid card.

According to powerstrip 155mhz x 355mhz

Compare here

3rd is with my trusty ATI Radeon rtl., the one in my sig.

Compare here

As you can see, is a $400 card worth 1000 points? I think NOT!!

hmm, that doesnt seem right the Ti4600 should be getting at least 11-1200 with that what drivers are you using? i agree with you do the extra 200$ over a Radeon8500 goes in the trashcan...may as well burn your money....

The drivers are the new 28.32's. Those numbers you see that are over 12,000 are massivly tweaked systems that most of us do not use. these are "real world" tests. If there is somebody getting these higher numbers with a similar system and are using bone stock 3D Mark tests, them prove me wrong.

The problem is that you're completely limited by your processor performance. Even with my P4 at 2940mhz I'm more limited by the processor than the GF4-4600. Change the GF4-4600 frequencies by 5% and see what the change in 3DMark2001 is. Now change your cpu/memory by 5% and run 3DMark2001 again. You'll find that the cpu makes a much larger difference.

Your kidding right? I think you may have lost the whole point of my post...nevermind.

I just ran the the default test with no overclock on the video card on my everyday air cooled P4 at 2448mhz.
27.70 drivers. I tried the 28.32 but they gave me about 100 points less.
The score is about 4000 more than I get in the same system with a gf3 overclocked.
I can get over 12k if I overclock the ti46000 a little.

That's a great score for a P4 2.44ghz but are people getting better scores with my same specs?

Thanks for the link Placid. Well for my system I guess that an ATI 8500 is the way to go. I surely can't justify spending $400 for 1000 points.

400 is WAY to much u are honsty buying the name now... and wtf is up with this i remeber when gf3 came out and it was 300 and i thought **** that was a lot.. and now they raised it to 400?? wtf is up with that.. this is truly unneeded power.. we are ocers right get a lower end ge4 or a higher end gf3 add a nice heatsink and fan to it and oc the **** out of it... we do it our cpus dont we.. whatever im geting off the subject..

hey TranceBear how many of those gf4 do u sell at ur shop for 400?

I get about the same score as that (10515) but when I turn everything on for best image quality with antilansing on,all settings in the game to max, and play my favorites.I sit back and think it was worth it for me,not everyone will agree but the games are so good looking and run so smooth you couldnt pay me to take it back out.Again, not for everyone but in my opinion it was worth every cent!I have other machines with a GF3 and a voodoo 3 3000,just not the same.I agree the price is steep and other cards will work just fine, just some of us are willing to get the extras I guess.Just my thought on it.The scores in 3dmarks dont always tell the whole story is all I'm saying.

Hey TranceBear, have you run the same test with your trusty Radeon and the 4600, both running 4x AA or even 2x??? I think you will find more justification for the extra money some shell out when you realize that the extra hardware, mainly the dual vertex shaders, really do make a difference in the "everyday" system. Shadowcat's post mentions that difference.

Well, if all your purchasing the card for is 3dmark benchmarking, then I would agree.

When the GF3 came out it was 399.99.

i bet you are getting those low scores because you have either vsync on or AA on..... that was a big problem whenever i first got my gf3 ti200, lowered my score about 1500.....and you have a faster cpu, so you should get a bit more......just check all your settings to make sure these are off if you are looking for pure speed

Just to clarify, I did not purchase this card. I run a computer store and I just pulled one of the shelf to test it in my system. All the tests were run at bone stock levels with both cards. The point I am making is that to me 1,000 points is not worth $400. This is just for FYI only. Don't take it like I am bashing the 4600, it is a great card, but I do not want some noob thinking he can get massive gains with this card. I was not expecting 15k, just something abit more than 1,000.

PS, and by the way, I do not play ANY games on my machine, benchmarking is the only use my video card gets.
