VH6-2 CPU fan header dead?

On last night's trip to 166FSB, I encountered the following problem:

I woke up this morning to a lockup. This has happened before at lower clock speeds. The system seemed to be in a suspend mode but wouldn't wake up. Reset button. POST freezes just before drive IDs. A few more resets with the same results and I try to get into BIOS. No go. Try pulling the plug to reset chip speed. Nope. Finally (first time ever) use the clear CMOS jumper.

While the side is off, I restart and see that the CPU fan isn't turning. Immediately turn it off. Try a couple of more times. Same thing. Grab the heatsink, and it's blazing... well, okay, not burning my skin off, but still damned hot. Use a 3 to 4 pin power adapter for the HSF and the fan turns fine. Reset to default speeds. Everything's peachy now. Boot, BIOS, WinME, everything.

Except I can't get ANY fan to power up off the CPU fan header. Probe pins 1 & 3 and I get around 3.3VDC (I'm assuming that these are the power pins). Tried 3 different fans on it with no luck. They just lurch at power-on and don't turn anymore. I have a stock Intel fan plugged into it now. VIA HM reports 7475 or 8450 RPM. Again, it ain't turnin'. Unplug the fan while powered up and it correctly shows 0 RPM. Plug it back in, shows the fictional RPM.

Has anyone ever burned up a fan header? Or am I overlooking something simple here? All feedback will be appreciated.
 
The answer to your question is in your sig! You're running that Delta 38 on a motherboard header. Shame on you, it's a no-no. But you have found that out the hard way. Leave it on the 3 to 4 pin connector. Why do you need to monitor the RPM of the 38? It's not like you won't know when it stops......everything gets quiet.

So it's not supposed to ride on the header? Damn. I guess I should RTFM. :) But it's been running fine on there for 4 or 5 weeks. Why screw the pooch now? And why do I still read 3.3V from the pins? I'm still assuming that 1&3 are right, anyway.
 
I have also burnt fan headers or something behind them -all three went some time (managed to short circuit mb badly). In fan header middle pin is the return and on the sides of depending which way you look are the +12V and monitoring. You actually still monitor the fan speed by attaching the corresponding cable (blue or yellow in my fans) to header same place it used to be and taking the power from PSU. That what I'm doing after that accident.

Thanks for the tip. And glad to see I'm not the only one to screw this up. :) I don't wanna have to RMA for something so small... wanna save that for the magic smoke. :D
 
The Delta 38's draw to much ammperage to safely use on the fan headers. 3 to 4 weeks is pretty good. They usually don't last that long. But I think it's in the manual of the fan. And it is on virtually every overclocking and sales site around.

I would RMA it to be safe. There is other damage that could have occured from this.

Well, I'm never one to pay much attention to what's posted all around me. :) I don't remember getting a manual with the fan... it was already attached to the heat sink, and (if I remember correctly) the whole assembly was in a mostly plain box with only a 3 to 4 pin adapter (yeah, yeah, shoulda, coulda, woulda).

Anyway, I may go ahead with the return if it could've fried elsewhere. Hate to give this one away while it's at 166, though.
