I just don't get it. I've tried installing the 4in1s and thought that I have but when I check the driver versions under system properties to match them up with the current driver set; system properties reads "no driver needed".

I've tried to install them seperately, downloaded them seperately, booted into safe mode and tried to update them manually, ran the 4in1 setup, and none of them have worked.

The IDE drivers do install but my HD scores are between that of an ATA33 and ATA66 (using HDtach, ATTO, and Sandra). Some suggested trying the Microsoft drivers but when I do that; windows doesn't recognize my drive and my scores are still kinda low. Via drivers do recognize the drive but my scores are low.

I'm using 98SE so it can't be the ATA100 bug that plagues those using 2000.

Any ideas? I'm just about to go and buy a promise card to see if that will solve the situation.

well, i dunno whats happening, but check that it is in fact, recognizing the dma100 in the bios, then make sure dma is enabled in windoze.

my sandra scores for HDD are off the chart on a single HDD non-RAID, on HDD-O and i have the 4in1 installed, my HDD drivers, and WinME
also on a rev. 1.2 iwill

N2 has it right, check to make sure the DMA box is checked in the properties for your drive in control panel-system. I had the same problem till I checked that box and bam, the score went up to about 22000. Now with my raid 0 striping going, I'm getting almost 46000 in Sandra.

hey!!! lookit that, i get my props from a senior member! :D
seriously tho, thats the first time somebody said i got somethin' right !!
"take my advice... at your own risk!"

Thanks TT120!!!

I forgot to mention that after I install the IDE drivers, it seems that Windows is regognizing my HDD as a Scsi device and not even allowing the DMA option to be checked or not.

Upon bootup, the drive is recognized as ATA100 though.

i think maybe the HDD is config wrong in the bios.
if you have just one HDD, it should be "Boot device one=HDD-0"
then set the other boot devices to disable.
and also disable any scsi in the bios. i can't recall if we have anything like..
AMI SCSI BIOS or not, but if it's in there... kill it... kill RAID too if you are'nt using it.
i understand that a RAID controller can be displayed as a SCSI card.

also, are you plugged into slot-1 IDE on the MOBO... check that.
you can disable RAID via a jumper on the mobo.
hope this helps bro!

I set the bios as indicated and it didn't make any difference that was noticeable. I also searched for any scsi options in the bios and found nothing.

As far as the IDE slots, I have my HDD plugged into IDE-0 (according to the manual). Should it be in IDE-1? I accidently plugged it in there one time and the performance was awful (but that was purely unplanned; I didn't make any changes in the bios prior to that).

BTW, I'm using a non-raided board.

Thanks for all the suggestions btw.

Although my operating system is way diffrent than yours, I think Via's drivers suck, I had soo many lockups with thier drivers, I'd just stick to windows drivers for max performance. After service pack 2 was available for windows 2000 My scores went up about 6,500 points in sisoft sandra 2001, I installed the via busmaster for windows 2000 and my scores went right back down to what they were. I dont think via has a clue when it come to writing drivers. That's just my opinion, I've never had any luck using them.. And I'm definatly glad Nvidia decided to start doing thier own chipsets solely for amd! I'll be willing to be these optimised chipsets will only help Amd lengthen the gap between Amd and Intel.

What make and model Drive is it?
i may have missed it but I did not see it posted.
I had this same problem on my Abit KA7 100
I was getting speeds at a 4gb speed in sandra. Then I reverted to some older 4 in 1 drivers not sure what version and now Im a tiny bit faster than ata 66 approx 15000 even though its a 100 capable drive, 98se wont recognise it at that.

I'm using the Maxtor plus 45 ATA100 (I know it's not an IBM but these new maxtors have performed right on par with the IBMs from all the reviews I've read). I would RMA it since I hear that their customer service is excellent but I got it for a gift and I don't have any receipts and the box was thrown out.

Well, as far as numbers go.

Sandra: 18000-20000
HDTach: RAT between 9.2-10.0
Read Burst Speeds 32.3-54.6
ATTO: Read burst speeds 32

I'm thinking that maybe my scores aren't that bad but shouldn't my read burst speeds be a little better though? I'll try messing with the drivers some more.

windows uses via drivers for via chipsets "out dated ones" and they surely do not suck perhaps you just dont know what you are doing
