Okay - my friend does a lot of video encoding, and right now he is using a crappy old Dell with a 600Mhz processor, 128MB SDRAM and Windows 98. Encoding a 700MB file takes about four hours.

I know Intel are superior to AMD when it comes to video encoding, so if my friend were to build a new pc with:

Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 3Ghz, overclocked somewhere between 3.2Ghz - 3.8Ghz.

512MB PC3200 DDRAM

Windows XP Home

With this new spec, how long would it take to encode a 700MB file? (Compared to the Dell's four hours.)

Depends how long it is, how big the image is, what type of encoding are you doing, etc. Its always different for each task at hand.

When I Backup DVD's it can take anywhere from 45-75min for a DVD using enhancments to make it look better. If it was just a plain DVD Backup maybe 30-60min.

I'd guess anywhere from 45 to 85 FPS for encoding with a nice high end computer.

Make sure to get him 1 GB of RAM for video stuff. And some nice HDD's (they will become a bottleneck with a new faster CPU)

Looking at what he is getting with his current rig i'd say his new one should get it done in about 15 - 20% of the time.

i don't think it's that long deathman, i sometimes "back up" DVD, the encoding time and ripping time takes about 1Hour, the encoding time is probably about 1/2 hour, if you have a fast ripper than you're good to go. I have an XP 3200 from my duron :)
