I'm posting this from Linux! Yes, Linux. This is my first ever Linux endevor, and I must say I am thoroughly impressed with it so far. It's pretty easy to set up (hell, the install only took me like 20 minutes). And it seems rather intuitive. There are a few things so far that kinda bug me. The text size in Konqueror is kinda small and I havn't figured out how to make it bigger, and some of the settings just seem kinda weird, but so far, its ok, and I'm sure I'll learn more about it soon. It's on a seperate harddrive right now, and I can't plug it into the main chain until I get a Y-splitter for my molex connector, but this is really great! I'm running Mandrake 8.2 (I downloaded all of the CDs last night for it. Good server, too).

Now I just have to fight w/ Wine and such and get my *** gaming and I'll be all good!

congradulations on getting your first linux install online! i remember similar dancing when i first got mine online :). as far as wine goes, good luck. from what i've heard it can be very frustrating to get configured right. but you won't be dissapointed!

i speak on behalf of the whole alt OS community when i welcome another into our ranks!

Mind if I ask why you have the BSD daemon as your avatar? Are you a BSD guy? If not, are you gonna be changing that to a Linux penguin, maybe?

That's a long story I'd rather not go into right now.

Right now I'm trying to fight w/ the installer package for LimeWire. It sez I need some Java VM's or something. Which I have, but I can't install it, because it doesn't like my DVD rom. I had it on the IDE chain for the install, then switched it back to the UDMA chain, and now it doesn't like it and I don't know how to fix it. I'll pro'lly end up formatting it and re-installing it after I can get it configured properly (ie, get the hd bolted into the case, rather than having it sitting on my desk.

I recommend getting the following to be able to do some windows stuff in linux, and its way easier to setup than bare wine, but it costs a few bucks, its not too bad however:
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover/
This is only 24.95, lets you use quicktime, windows media player, word, excel, and powerpoint viewer.
And
http://www.transgaming.com
This will let you play some windows games with minimal fuss, and its only a 5$/month subscritption, which allows you to vote on what you want them to work on getting to work. :D

Well, I tried again tonight. I got the drive on the proper chain w/ my 20GB Windows-only drive, got Linux installed on my 5GB Linux-only drive and Linux ate my Windows 2000 bootsector! I had to use the recovery console to get my Windows back. I'll have another go at installing Linux again later. It's 10 after 3 in the morning.
