Could one of you people please tell me whether its definitely my main board or my chip that's just died??
I had the case open I was fitting a new duct to my blow hole and I had prime 95 open and running and before I knew it my CPU tem was up from normal 35-36*c and at 41 and rising, I stopped prime 95 and the temp rose more slowly. I carried on working thinking it would recover but a bit later I could smell some thing that smelt not quite like smoke. I looked up and I had a B.S.O.D. it said some thing like ¡§win 32 tried to Wright to read only memory.¡¨
I restarted the PC and the side was on now but it said updating dmi data and then crashed so I restarted it and got nothing no beeps just ¡§FF¡¨ and that's it. My screen stays blank.
the manual sergests a main board fault but how can this kill it?

First check to see if there is anything obviously seared, singed, charred, fried, or bbq'ed (put another chip on the barbie). Check your processor, socket, northbridge, memory, mofsets, anything and everything. If there is nothing obvious, take the heatsink off of the processor (if it's not already off from checking) clean it and re-apply ASII or equivalent, re-install the heatsink, clear cmos, cross your fingers, say a prayer, and power up.

Good luck.

i took of the chip and the lable on the botem is a nice black colour
so its died. Amazingly the tops fine thats probly thanks to the swiftec
I put my sisters chip in and it worked but temp stayed at 25 *c so i think the termister/termal diode has had it
Is that a posible temp for a stock 800 duron????
my case temp is 19 and i have a big bolt on swiftec air cooler

man this is funny.... just tested my friends pentium system to see if it was his mobo or cpu that was dead.

Ok so heres how i found out. Basically i took the cpu out and put it into a good system to test if it was alive. And what do we know if worked just fine on the other system, so it must be the mobo right? Well that appeared to be the culprit, but to be absolutely sure i swapped a cpu that i knew was good into the mobo under question. And yea the sure signs of mobo failure was all over, total black screen, and automatic on one power is connected.

Also personal experience with a fried cpu, the screen will also be total blackness, but if u smell the bottom of the chip you should smell like a burnt odor..

If your CPU is dead, you can power up the system, but there will be no display, or beeps. If there are beeps you gotta check what they mean in your manual, but if you get any display at all it's likely nothing is 'dead,' but rather broken or configured improperly.
