16:9 and 16:10 monitors can run 4:3 resolutions windowed or letterboxed. One of the best things about the 16:9 and 16:10 screens is that they are MUCH better when using multiple windows, since you can put them side-by-side with the extra width of 16:9 and 16:10.

Yeah, saw those nec ones...CRAZY expensive, and plus the response time is like 30ms...compared to 5ms on a regular decent monitor.
Is there any higher dpi monitor with fast response times that is not crazy expensive?
-and not too small too-

Not that I know of in 4:3, you'll need to look into 16:9 and 16:10 screens.

Actually after writing that I stumbled upon a 1680x1050 19" lcd monitor. It offers a good ratio between size and amount of pixels -and thus dots per inch...around 0.24mm pixel size- and the 16:10 ratio which is not that bad.
The other interesting thing was a 1920x1200 17" laptop screen...is there any way to mount it to a stand and add driver, psu and stuff to make it work as a desktop monitor?
It's just so sexy...that resolution -and 16:10 ratio- in a smaller screen packs some good punch dpi wise.
Am I too crazy?

Check out the Dell UltraSharp 2007FP. It's 20" and has a maximum resolution of 1600*1200. Not sure how much it costs over in the US, but the Australian Dell store has it going for AU$469 ATM.

I should check the local dell store...they have some sweet stuff.
Monitor should arrive along with a new case with my next paycheck :D
I'll check that model out now.

I sometimes miss the old 4:3 17" I had. We still use it at work though. Have a Dell 2407WFP now and like being able to look at two pages side by side.

I just started using my old 4:3 LCD from years back for my secondary machine, I actually like the height of it for web browsing (no gaming).
