watercooling with something diff than water?

Anyone tried/have any ideas of a non-dangerous liquid that transfers heat better than h20?
 
you could do that but then you'd have to worry about how cool the water will actually get and if condensation will become an issue
also, you might wanna start to think about all the power and effort you're putting into the rig to drop it a couple more degrees and have to decide when "enough is enough" :)
 
I wonder if alchohol would work. This will sound really n00bish, but when i pour iso alchohol on my hand and blow on it, it gets really cold :). And since it is in an airtight loop, I dont THINK (correct me if Im wrong) it can evaporate. I don't know if it will start eating the tubing or pump or rad innards though.

EDIT- after reading my post it sounded like i thought the water made the cpu cold, instead of carrying/holding the heat somewhere else. That is not what I think :). Does alchohol (iso) conduct thermal energy?
 
the cold from the alcohol is from it evaporating. it requires energy to change it from a liquid to a gas, which it gets from your hand (i think thats how phase change cooling works). water is still the best.
 
AFAIK water has the highest specific heat capacity of pretty much all liquids. In any case, it is definitely the best liquid to use in watercooling. IPA does conduct thermal energy, but not as well as water. It will lower the freezing point of water however, which is useful only if you plan on chilling your water below the freezing point.

The reason your hand gets cold when you pour alcohol on it and blow on it is because of the rapid evaporation. The same effect can happen with water, its just that water will not evaporate as fast. The change of state in the evaporation is what causes your hand to be cold. Change of state (liquid to gas in this case) requires energy, which is taken from your hand.
