Well, im gonna be grabbing one of these for Christmas (finally replacing the IBM Deskstar 60GXP that i have) and im not quite sure which to go with. I have experiance with both companies and i've loved em both so theres no preferance of brand really.

Which would you guys recommend (im also open to other suggestions such as Seagate, etc)

This is EIDE btw (dont have an SATA controller)

*edit* Also, is this Maxtor "Data Protection System" anything special? I'm trying to find some information on what exactly it is, but can find squat

WD all the way. from the many IT people i have asked this is the resounding answer. also WD has the only 3 year warranty as opposed to 1yr.

for me i have 2 80gb WD and just ordered another 120gb WD so i personally love them.. get the special edition 8gb buffer ones. amen. the end.

yeah the WDs are great, but didn't they just change their warrenty length?

According to what I've seen, the Special Edition ones (the 8mb buffer ones) still have a 3 year warrenty

No they changed even the 8MB ones..... Because there new raptors have a 5 year warranty.... so they had to cut back...

Maxtor are crap... HATE THEM!!!

WD all the way my pal

Not with the 8mb ones. Looking at WD's website right now, they still have the 3 year warrenty. The "regular" (2mb buffer) now have a 1 year warrenty

im going Maxtor. Even though they are louder, they are a bit faster. Plus, most of us here will be wanting a new drive after a year. I dont care about a 3 year warrenty. In three years the drive will be so outdated, I wouldnt want it anyway.

I have purchased 5 maxtor hd's for my personal pc's over the last two years and I must say I have been pleased. In all fairness though, I have never used a wd hd but certainly wouldn't rule them out. My last hd from maxtor was bad but they sent a replacement streight away. It has been working great (knock on wood).
