Western Digital Corp. is offering free software to about 1 million consumers to resolve a class-action lawsuit alleging that its computer hard drives stored less material than promised — a discrepancy stemming from high-tech's different standards for sizing up digital data.

Rest of the story here:

Your going to need your serial to prove purchase. They have some alternate ways to apply. All your going to get is soem backup software valued at $30. Seems other drvie makers will be hit later on and like WD settle.

Here is the form. The Claim Form must be completed by any class members wishing to receive the Class Benefit, and the information provided there will be used to confirm eligibility and issue the settlement benefit. The Claim Form must be completed no later than July 15, 2006

If it is a valid serial. It will fill out the purchase date and serial for you after you submit. Depending on what you have. It is pretty clear.

I got my serial off the back of the drive on the barcode. Opposite of the molex. Since my drives could not be read by lifegaurd( dang RAID controller) and I did not want to pull the drives out to read the top. If you have it on a normal controller you can use datalifeguard to pull the serial.

If you do not want to do it online, they offer mail in forms in pdf format.

Your welcome. It should work.

Under the settlement announced Tuesday, Western Digital will give away software designed to back up and recover computer files to anyone who bought one of the company's disk drives from March 22, 2001, through Feb. 15 of this year.

thats tempting if I didnt have to dismantle a ton of things, given I have maybe 10 WD HDD purchased during that time frame, just too much of a hassle. Still a nice find though for those willing to take the time.

Luckily I have the drive facing where I could read the tail end of the drive. If you can read the tiny bar code on the opposite end (from the molex) of the drive/ that is the serial. Just join all the separated letters and numbers together.

I looked and thought I would not be able to get the serials since my drives are custom mounted. If the drives are not on a RAID controller the data life guard should be able to pull the serial off the drive. I found out it will not read while under my RAID controller.

Hmm....I've currently got seven WD drives w/i the specified time frame, so...

FWIW,

I Googled the software listed in the settlement FAQ, & here's what I found:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EHPZVI/102-1711883-4324935?v=glance&n=229534

Amazon lists it for 90 bucks!

Didn't see the 30 dollar value part, but that's a pretty large price discrepancy. Either the OEM version is far cheaper, or the s/w WD is giving away is a cut down product (or different product).

Well, anyway, like I said, FWIW.
