Just a few ideas:

- A thread in the Forum FAQs and Guidlines? Introduce folding@home etc?

- Do you have a website? Its the perfect place to plug folding@home, I plan to do this the next time I update my site.

- A place in the forum guide? Pointing them towards the appropriate thread(s)?

- The folding thread in GD is getting kinda cluttered, It might be an idea to delete and remake the thread now and then - keep it short and to the point.

Thanks. David

Those are all great ideas, but I dont think that many people look at the sticky in GD.

And if a newb joins the forums, and the thread is labelled "Join Folding@Home", I have a feeling they will just pass it by. We should make some catchy title at least.........

I know what you mean - something like:
"We WILL be number 1 again - with YOUR help!!"

I just joined the forum yesterday. I joined your (our) folding team. I was about to join hardocp's, but I liked these forums better. For my first 10 hours I have about 40 WU for the PC's at my work.

EDIT: Cause I am a noob, I am counting it like this:
when it says 3/100 I am counting it like 3 WU. Is 1 WU when it hits the 100? If so then I made a little error.

I don't know what my home PC is, but I'm guessing 5 or 6. Its an athlon1900xp.

I'll try to put it on my gf's computer too. That thing always just sits there with nothing to do, and some boring screensaver.

Welcome! Thanks for helping out. 40WUs in 10hrs! I have done about that many in 10months :D.

This boost should help see us back to number1 !!!

Thanks again - fold on! :D

I've made that stupid mistake in two threads now. Anyway I have 18 computers in my classroom right now folding. They are all celery 800mhz. They're combined total is now 56 "PARTS" of a WU. Not an actual WU. That would be nice if they were.

And sorry to get your hopes up. But hopefully these comps should finish their units within a week because we reghost the comps every so often. I think they're rounding out to 1 part an hour. So maybe I'll have 18 by the end of the week. I'm considering putting folding at home on slower comps(like 266), but I'm not sure if its worth it.

Do you get credit for each part of the WU you do?

BK

Welcome to the team. First the 1/100, 2/100 are frame one and frame two of a WU. Some WU's have 10 frames some have 100. You get credit when the finished WU is sent back to Stanford. The 266's will finish most WU's on time but that can take as long as a week with the bigger WUs. They will probably not finish if they are not on all the time. If you have any more questions just ask. Fold on!!!!

Welcome to the team and the forms wolfmist. Your going to be better off in the end to follow your point totals as differant WU are worth differant points. You can find the standing of the team as well as your standing at the following places.

You can find the team stats at www.statsman.org
Also at overclockers-stats page by Den

So we don't get credit then for partially completed ones.

My Athlon1900xp has been chugging along all day and I'm now at 62/100. I hope it finishes before the day ends.

As for the 18 comps with the 800 mhz celerons, those I hope get left on all night. I'll see how far they've come along tomarrow.

I'm going to scour our labs to find a bunch of computers that aren't doing anything, are fast, and won't be ghosted anytime soon.

Anyone know if the folding program affects perfomance when doing other things?

BK

Welcome to the team :D
It shouldn't affect performance while doing other things as it is programmed to take a back seat to everything else that is running. SETI even has a higher priority than the folding client, or at least it did. The celerons should perform well, especially if left on overnight. and not all of the proteins are that big. Others will finish much more quickly. :D

as for the GD thread. It does get read, but it gets read the most when it is active. It is cluttered and we can ask Shadow or SpeeDj to wipe out a lot of the clutter. I was hoping to see just one more run of posts before cleaning it out again.

What do you suggest for a title? I'll go with the old Folding for a cure. If you have any suggestions then lay them on the table and let's see what we come up with.

Also very important be sure you have permission to use the systems for folding. And assuming you have permission cant you get FAH client added to the ghost. Then when they do reghost you will still have the client installed. You might lose a WU but better then having to reinstall

As a reminder to all get permission as poeple have gotten into some very real and costly trouble for not seeking permission.

Hows this for a title:

"Overclockers.com - with your help we can be number one again!"

Something dramatic and inspiring. Something that nobody knows what it is, and has to read it to see.

I have 2 done now. At least my name is up on their website with 1 done and 4 points. The second one just finished this morning right as I woke up. The both of them combined took more than 28 hours to do on an AMD1900xp. I thought the average was 3 a day. Must have gotten hard ones.

Anyway, I just talked to the guy in charge of what can be installed in the images for the comps. He seemed interested, but told me that it would be done in the colleges name. Another thing is that he said they already have the text version of Seti@home running on all the comps. Though I did make the point of how this was for helping finding a cure for Alzheimers. That is what its doing right?

I was hoping that it ended up being installed i could change the settings to put it in my name and our teams number in my room.

team 32 has plent of members. what we need is more that are dedicated to folding. next time you visit den's stats page look at how many member there are compared to active members. ever since I started folding I haven't shut down except for upgrades and maintance and IMO we need more people to do this. I have notice some people folding in spurts.

Is there a way to do a "list" pm where you can list all the f@h members on one private message? maybe that might spur a little interest again in some of the members that lost interest or something like that.

There is no way to sort users into folders and non-folders except by hand. You could try a mass PM to all members/all new members to recruit them to folding?

Heres a boost - I am now plugging overclockers.com folding on my website :)
