I have a P2 350 @ 392 with a 112 MHz bus and the Windows hardware monitoring utility just went nuts, saying that the CPU fan was going too fast and the MB started making a noise like a siren. Windows crashed and I turned the computer off. I turned it on again and there was still the siren noise. I tried again and since it was complaining about the fan going too fast I figured thee was no real danger in letting it boot to Windows, so I did. The siren noise stopped and everything seems fine. I guess it could have overheated or something, since I was running Seti and that tends to boost the temps quite a bit, but it did say the fan was going too fast. Now the hardware monitor is fine, the fan is going at the regular speed (5800 RPM), and the CPU temperature is in the low 30s. Can anyone tell me what the siren noise means and why that happened?

You know shadow when I assembled my BE6II it did the siren thing too I just unplugged the speaker cause I figured I messed up the connection somehow. I didnt O/C it at all? Hmm maybe I should plug it in now that I have changed CPUs.

Sorry for not being a help on the original prob.

No it's a bit slower and lower in pitch. When I turned it on again it was saying stuff about the fan malfunctioning and the temp was normal.

Most boards with an award bios will give a siren noise when the cpu is not seated properly.
Mine gives a "neener-neener" sound when the cpu ain't in all the way.
If that is a stock hsf you might want to invest in a better h.s. than intel provides, and your heat thing might go away

If the CPU weren't seated properly, would the computer even boot? What's a good hsf for a slot A pentium 2?

The weird thing is that since I let it boot to windows despite the noise it has worked fine. As soon as windows started the noise stopped and I haven't heard a peep out of it since. The fan speed is normal.

The only other thing is since I OCed it a couple of months ago the -5 voltage has been rather low, like -5.5 or less. I wouldn't have thought that increasing the FSB and not adjusting anything else would have had any effect on the voltages whatsoever since the voltages are set by the power supply. Am I wrong? The other voltages are well within the range. Could I be overtaxing the power supply, which I believe is 250W, with 2 HDs and 2 CD drives, and a couple of extra case fans? Could that have caused the speed of the CPU fan to be misread?
