I just hooked up my IntelliMouse Optical to my new pc and it works fine. But when I turn the pc off, the mouse stays on. What the heck???

That is utterly bizarre. SO, somehow it is getting power after the 'puter is shut down? I guess flipping the switch on the back (of the power supply) kills it?

Yeah, that kills it. But the strange thing is that it never did this on my other pc.

More curiousity. Do you have it hooked up to PS/2 or USB? As you've probably allready figured out, the board has power all of the time, and for some reason the mouse port is live. I'm guessing PS/2?

Ok, here’s some more info. It’s a USB mouse, but I had it hooked up to one of those little PS/2 adapters. I just plugged it in the USB port, and now it turns off when the pc turns off. Strange

Well, now we know what to tell anyone who ever posts with this problem again! Glad you got it solved.

This must has to do with the Microsoft Mouse itself, where mine is hooked up into the PS2 port (USB to PS2 Adapter), and it wil turn off when powered off.

Maybe there’s something weird with my mobo cuz my mouse didn’t do this with my other one. :eh?:

No, that's entirely normal. The PS2 ports are usually powered regardless of the system being on or off. As long as the PSU is turned on and plugged into the MB, the PS2 port shoud have power. The USB however requires the system to actually be turned on. My KVM's at work rely on the power from the PS2 ports to run. The way I've set them up anyways. Hope this helps.

CM, do they have more power when the system is powered up? Is that why you're supposed to turn it off before you plug in a PS/2 mouse?

na, the mobo/os has to detect it, thats why u have to turn off ur system before u plug any ps2 device in, if u unplug a mouse while the system is turned on and try to plug it bakin, it wont work. USB devices are detected whenever u plug them in, thats the beauty of usb i guess.

the usb meece's com with specific instructions on how to hook them up, usb: load drivers, reboot, unplug ps2, plug in usb. ps2 adapter(i think): loaad driver, turn off rig, switch meece's, boot up.

ive had some issues with my usb and os installs, always use ps2 devices to install os's.

I heard once that you can fry the ps/2 port if the 'puter is on when you do it. I wasn't sure if that was correct or not, I didn't want to try it to find out! But if it has power all of the time I guess that wouldn't be right, so I guess it wasn't correct. Interesting.
Edit: I keep a spare serial mouse around, just in case I work on something like an old socket 7 that I don't have a ps/2 adapter for.

na, i dont htink u can fry anything if u try to plug a ps2 in while computer is on, it has alrdy determined that nothing is there.

*becuase ive done it*...hehe

mabey you had some sort of mouse wake up function going on in bios or something like that
