Can anyone with hands on experience with both WD drives and Seagate tell me which are louder. I have 3 8mb Cache 7200RPM Western digitals and they are too loud for me, will the seagates actually be noticably quieter, or are most hard drives all the same? I don't want to waste my money for too little a difference. Thanks

Seagates are the quietest drives in the industry. Should be a fair amount softer than the WD's.

At the moment, all I can hear from my machine is my hard drives, literally. When I unplug them, it's silent, so if I was just running 2 seagates, it would still seem silent huh? I need to know, I'll be ordering them tonight if I get the recommendations.

If it isn't totally silent, it's probably the closest you'll get with desktop drives.

I'm not sure whether or not this mod is possible in your case, (no pun intended) but if you can do something to mechanically isolate your drives from the case mount, it can make a significant difference. Even cutting up an old bicycle inner tube and inserting thin cut rubber strips between your drive and the case will help. Your new quieter Seagates will then be as close to silent as you can get.

i got a wd and a SilentDrive from quietpc.com it completly mutes the hd,
i to have silent pc components my loadest now is my zalman psu am also getting a Barracuda 200gb hope its silent

The Seagates in my rig are silent. I can't hear them at all. All I hear is my fans whirring.

I have two 40GB Seagate Barracuda ATA IV drives here. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a quiet rig.

I have a 80gb Seagate (not sure what model, I think Barracuda), and would agree with everyone else, I can't hear it at all.

Got a Samsung Spinpoint 120G HDD today as well now - its dead quiet too.

I'm going with Samsung. I've heard great things about their HDs and how quiet they are. I'm sure it's splitting hairs between quietness of samsung and seagate. If they are as good as their monitors have been for me, I'll be very happy.

My WD's are loud...the only thing in my case that I can hear. It's irritating. You can't hear yours because you have fans probably, my case is silent watercooled excellence. I still haven't come to a decision yet either, I wish I could hear for myself first.

I've used maxtor, WD, seagate and one Samsung. In noise level it's ranked like this Maxtor>WD>Seagate=Samsung but I find the Seagate faster than the samsung. Samsung might have made faster drives since then.

Seagates are all incredibly silent....you don't know they're on unless you put your hand on them. The fluid bearing motors just don't make any noise....Our server has 4 of them in it and all you can hear are the exhaust fans.....I will admit though, the 160 gig SATA versions of the drive seem to make a bit of the old fashioned "crunching" noise while reading/writing/seeking....I wonder why....they are amazingly fast though

So now I'm stuck, the website review says Samsung, but some of us say Seagate. Would most of you say Seagate=samsung in sound?
