What can I do to prevent dust from falling on my computer parts while they dry from being spray painted? I would do this outside but it might rain and the bugs are starting to hatch. The only place I can do this is in our basement (way to much dust) or our spa room (still to much dust but not as bad.) So i'm setup to paint in the spa room but I dont know what to do about dust problems. I already tried painting once and dust got me bad. See my other post called project: bling bling here. There are pics of the case so you can see my dust problem.

Anyways, does anyone have any ideas how to eliminate dust or maybe even attract it to a corner of the room or something? Thanks for any help in advance (I need it.)

This is a weird one... Hang the part upside down and let the paint dry... Dust finds it difficult to go up!

Clean your basement. (j/k)
Try making a tent out of a tarp. The paint department has these really cheap plastic drop cloth's that unfold to be really big. See if you can make some type of frame to go around your case so you can drape the plastic over it so it doesn't touch.
Know what I mean? Good luck.

good idea! I was thinking about making something like that but with newspaper and duct tape (I'm to lazy to go to the store.) I just gotta figure out what to use as a frame now...

Put a couple 'o three chairs around the case and drape the cover over everything. Those cheap one's Im talking about are only like $1 or so.

I do all my painting in the basement. Everytime I paint, I completely vacuum the entire area I am painting in(including the ceiling). A clean work area solves a lot of aggravation. craigiz1's idea is a real good one too.

it helps to hang all your stuff vertically, i usually just undo some wire hangers and use those to hang my stuff, also don't spray real wet coats of paint, do most of the coverage in light coats....then at the end do your wet coat. If you're painting in the garage or something take a garden hose and get a real fine mist of water spraying out of it, spray it in the air lightly throughout the area, it'll help get the dust on the ground. (used to do this when I painted cars at a friends shop)

I just had a brain-fart.

Tell me what you all think of this little idear.

Paint, then put a big cardboard box over it, like leave the top of the box open, tip it upside down and your problem is solved

Just make the sure the box is REAL REAL clean

hmm just thought of something. How long will it take to dry if the air isn't circulating? It would be like it was sitting in a room with no ventilation.

if you have access to a vaccume with hepa or similer filtering you could turn it on and go around the room filtering the air or you could invest some $$$ and by one of those big room air filters. that should take care of everything in the air.

Hang it form the celling. Thats what I ended up doing and it worked the best. A vacume jsut blows the dust around. Hang as high as possible and you will be fine.

Only problem is it isn't that easy to hang a case side from my basement ceiling.

Why Not? Just use wire and wrap it around the water pipes or put screws in the 2x6 that are there. (id spell out floor jowises(sp) but i dont know how to spell it).

Go to the bathroom and turn on the hot water until the whole room is steamy. This should settle all of the dust particles onto the ground and proceed with the painting as soon as the air in the bathroom is not so steamy.

good idea but my mom would kill me if I painted in the bathroom no matter how protective I was. Also, too many family members would be going in the bathroom letting dust in. I wonder how pro. painters handle dust. They prob have secure rooms or something. Anyways i'm just rambling on. Thanks for the idea ... maybe it will help someone else.

Paint your stuff outside right after it rains. Then you won’t have to worry about dust too much. :)

FYI, professional painters (car painters anyways) usually work in paint booths that circulate air downward over the car, that way the air sucks all the dust down into the floor (which holds filters)...then the air is looped back through.

There's a temp control in there too, and the painter usually cranks up the heat when he pulls a car in to warm up the metal so the paint lays down better, and it'll dry faster as well. Then when you're done painting, you crank the heat in there up to like 140-150F to dry it out.....

I've heard of "water wall" paint booths, also, that have a fan at one end of the room behind a waterfall....the fan sucks all the air through the waterfall, which traps all the dust in the room. Never worked in one, though so i can't say if they're any good or not.
