I am sorry that I keep posting ****, I am just so frustrated.

I have replaced so many components.
Today I got a replacement for that 1.53 I thought was bad and I got a 1.4
When I boot up it is still slow!
The celeron p4 I put in worked great. But both of these P4 chips have sucked. When I boot up, everything stock, no overclock. I boot up into windows and after the windows splash screen it will sit there for like 5 minutes with a black screen, then it will come up with the logon prompt. I have no idea why it could be doing this. I have bought a new motherboard, new memory, and a new processor, and I am still having the same problems that I had with a different motherboard and different memory. It is getting ridiculous!

I have a 350watt power supply. That should be just fine to run a p4 2.4ghz at stock speed.

I actually slowed this p4 2.4 down to like 1.8 and it works great. AHHHHH!!!!

I can clock this thing up, but at any speed (even 2.4) after the splash screen it just sits at a black screen for a while then it will finally give you a windows logon. :(

what hard drive(s) are you using? what mobo are you currently running? what version of windows are you running?

more info please. could be a defective hard drive, or you aren't loading the mobo chipset drivers or the hd controller drivers causing you crappy performance.

check device manager and look for yellow exclamation marks to see what isn't loaded or needs updating.

All drivers are installed.
Fresh install of XP

My harddrive isn't the best.
Maxtor 20 gig but would that cause what I am describing?

If I throw a P4 Celeron in here I have no trouble.

I am using a IC7 Abit.

Thanks!

The install was done on a 2.53 stock.
I was having trouble with that as well, I thought it was the chip so I returned it for this 2.4

I shouldn't have to reinstall Windows everytime I change my FSB or memory settings should I?

Is that a 5400 rpm 20 gb hdd if so that could be ur problem. And u could run bootvis to help it out.

Yeah, it is 5400
It is an older HD

Why could my Celeron p4 2 gig (clocked at 2.8) work great but not a regular P4 with this drive?

Damn, gotta get more hardware!! :(

Maybe SATA :)
heh

It is just weird though.

If I clock it down to like 1.9 it works fine!
But then up to like 2.4 + on the P4, not Celeron, it takes forever to load windows.
But yeah, I don't know what else to try, I have already replaced everything else :)

thats your only weak link, from what i can see. a new 7200rpm hard drive or a raptor should make a world of difference over the 5400 rpm maxtor which was slow even for a 5400.

while i think a 7200 hd would be nice, i don't think that is your problem (because the celeron is fine)....

maybe there is a problem with your power supply...what is the brand? maybe it has trouble with more power hungry cpus...weak 12v line or something...

It is a fairly generic 350watt PS

Yeah, I am not fully convinced it is the hard drive.
I just don't know where to go from here.

I can try to borrow a PS from a Co Worker of mine.
Hopefully he didn't take that one out of his car yet, but he might have.

He has a 420 watt out of a machine of his that was in his car last week. I could try to borrow that and see.

It is just so weird
When I step this P4 down it will go into windows quickly. But anything else and right after the splash screen I get this black screen for a few minutes, then windows logon screen comes up.

i think it could be the supply...what is the model of the 420 watt? even if it is crappy at least give it a try....

you can get a GREAT, quiet supply here http://www.xpdirect.com/35sparpowsup.html

this supply can put out 454 watts (and powers my dual see sig) and it makes no noise at all with the 120mm fan...

I cant remember the model of my friends.

Enermax I think.

Hmmmm
it is odd, after I let it take a couple of minutes to get into Windows it seems fine.
I am running Sandra burn in for the hell of it and it is working.....

that's strange....i can't remember...did you reinstall windows the whole way through with that pentium 4's?

it shouldn't matter though...

power supply is the most often accused and the least often culprit of all computer hardware problems.

a 350watt generic power supply is more than enough to power your system. the meager power requirements of your p4 isn't slowing your system down. but give a new p/s a try if you have a spare. you have nothing to lose. if you buy a new one you are almost guaranteed to be taking it back. :(

get a decent hard drive dude.

Yeah
I have reinstalled Windows a ton.

Pretty much in the past few days, the only things I haven't swapped out are my video card, my nic card, my power supply, my hard drive, floppy, burner and dvd

I have been switching hardware out all over the place!

Only things I can see it being are HD and PS though.
What to do...what to do....

slow boots and slow shutdowns are classic slow hard drive symptoms. i'm not going to beat a dead horse anymore. :) good luck.
