Someone else's headache. xD

GeForce 9800 GX2. Acquired this off of fleabay a few years back for pretty cheap to add into my collection of failed gaming devices, and I guess never tested it until earlier this week while going through a tote of PC parts. Fans spin up but couldn't get a signal out of it. Hoping it's something stupid but seeing the TIM has been messed with makes me think the seller already tried to get it going. Boo.

This thing was a MASSIVE pita to get apart, too. The metal shroud seemed to be locked in place by this little rectangle in the metal case that pushes against the PCB to one of the cards, and once you overcome that then it gets caught on the power connector. Here's to hoping that myself (or more-so the previous owner) didn't fubar this thing when trying to figure out what's wrong with it.

It's a long... LONNNNNG story...

...but the short version is that it took me THIRTY YEARS to get this microphone.

(It's also a pretty funny story.)

1_1_mr_microphone_sm58.jpg

I'd just gotten my first car. One of the first things I did was drive down to Guitar Center to buy a microphone. I'd done my research. I knew that then, as now, as for all time... the most popular microphone in the entire world was the Shure SM-58.

I was a little bit nervous because, as far as I knew, only FAMOUS people could own microphones. I'd never seen anyone who wasn't famous with one. My parents didn't have one... My friends... My enemies... NOBODY had a microphone.

So I went in and told the guy behind the counter I wanted a Shure SM-58 and the conversation went sort of like this:

"Sure thing! And I'd be happy to sell it to you. We've got a million of them. You see that wall over there? It's actually just a bunch of SM58's turned to the side. But I'll sell you one... if that's what you want. But is it what you REALLY want? Because, if you want the BEST vocal microphone out there... then you need to own the Sennheiser e835..."

I was already intimidated just BEING THERE (remember... I was still a kid). I bought (and still own) the Sennheiser e835.

All the way into the parking lot... microphone in one hand... receipt in the other... I thought security was going to tackle me and I'd be arrested for Buying a Microphone Without Being Famous.

Flash forward some 18 years later. Different shop... Different city... Different Language... Different COUNTRY... I'm in the market for a microphone. Maybe I left my Sennheiser back in the States... maybe I just needed a second microphone to record vocals and instrument at the same time. This time... I'm not a kid anymore. And I'm in no mood for games. I want a Shure SM-58. I'm going to GET a Shure SM-58.

I'm in Barcelona Spain. I remember it was kind of rainy that day. I arrived by motorbike. Had a hard time finding the place.

"I'd like a Shure SM-58. No funny stuff."

He reaches under the desk... puts a Shure SM-58 on the counter... and says:

"Will that be cash or charge...?"

Relieved... I pull out my wallet and tell him "I think that'll be..."

"You didn't let me finish, Sir... Will that be cash or charge... is what I would be saying... but AKG just released their D5... the greatest microphone of ALL TIME. As you can see... I'm the only person left in this huge store... The others have all been hospitalized from staring at the D5 for too-long."

"I want the SM-58."

"Perfectly understandable, Sir. Will you be needing anything else with that?"

"Yeah... I guess I need a mic stand and a new mic cable..."

"Ooooh... You're out of luck, Sir... The only mic stand we've got is five hundred bucks."

"What?!"

"Yeah! Some American band came through here and bought everything. We also only have Deluxe Regal Blessed-by-the-Queen Mic Cables left..."

"Oh no!"

"75 bucks each, Sir... But if you'll look behind you... AKG is currently running a special where you get the D5 microphone, stand, and cable for the same price as just your SM-58."

I got the D5... mic cable... and stand.

Then TODAY... some thirty years after my first microphone... I had a hundred bucks to spend and I'd had my eye on this one shop ever since I moved back to France...

Why this shop? Because they only HAD the Shure SM-58.

And now I have all three.

Got an open box Asus Vivobook S 15 3K OLED Copilot+ PC Laptop with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus ARM to play with at Best Buy. Came in at under $500 and was in as new condition. Runs nice, the only ARM related issue so far is that although my Canon printer/scanner prints, the scan software doesn't run. The latest windows 11 update solved the problem with running Microsoft Office.

The OLED display is nice, it has the numeric keypad and an HDMI port unlike most Copilot+ laptops. No touchscreen, but I'd rather not have one anyway. Very light, long battery life, fast WiFi and performance seems snappy. If I keep it, it replaces my 12-year-old X79/Xeon E5-1620 daily driver which is having some old-age issues. Plus when we downsize to our new house later in the year, there's no room for a desk and desktop computer upstairs. There will be a full-sized finished basement for my other desk and gaming desktop in my sig, but I'll need a laptop upstairs for general computing.

Edit: Got Office 2024 running on it and it seemed all was well. Then Asus started loading a firmware update ..... came back to it after a bit with the blue recovery screen. Restarts didn't work so I had to get the BitLocker key from my Microsoft account and reset it. So, I returned it.
