anyone know .. like an average ? will it break 3ghz ? i remember seeing someone was running a 57 @ 3150 on air ..

im gonna sell my opty 150 .. and need something new .. i dont want another opty .. so its either an x2 or a 57 lol .. 57 is an impulse buy cuz i can have it tomorrow .. im just not sure .. i dont really multitask .. like i wont burn a dvd while im gaming .. etc .. mainly do everything seperately ..

with the fx60 coming out mid january and avaible for preorder for like 1500 i heard .. thats pretty high ..

any idea on what 57s do on air ?

Even though an FX would be sexy to own...you ever thought of dual core as an option?

just because you dont multi task doesnt mean you shouldnt buy an x2 processer. games will be written to use both cores and nVidia drivers are being changed to use the 2nd core during games. not forgetting system tasks that can use the other core...... ITS THE FUTURE. but its ere now ....lol

not sure on FX57, id imagine about 2.9-3.0 with some decent cooling

Should do 3.1 with good air.

The FX-60 is a dual core AND have benefits of an FX, so if your willing to spend $1000 on the FX-57, why not save up for the FX-60.

Dual core will eventually have much more benefits in gaming. They have already shown gaming improvements on dual core vs single cores since dual cores came out. The dual core will be much more future proof, when games start benefiting from dual cores more. The only reason I can think of to get an FX is if you want to OC it extremely. You'd have to spend the same amount on money you spent on the FX-57 and spend it on the cooling to get much better clocks. You'll almost never take advantage of the unlocked multipliers on air cooling.

i mean my current opty does 2.9 - 2.96 .. buts its etchy .. sometimes it does .. sometimes it doesnt ..

i owned 2 dual cores before .. a 3.8 that would only do like 2.4 .. and a 4400+ that did around 2.5 ..

i dunno what to do anymore

would u guys switch from a 2.9-2.96 opty single core .. to like a 2.4ghz dual core ?

No. Right now there are too few multithreaded apps to justify the performance hit. I would keep the Pwnteron for now, wait 6-9 months and then upgrade to a cheap(er) dualcore that will hopefully OC around the same as your current chip. Prices are gonna come down and there will be more dual/multithreaded apps around that time as well. Along with the impending release of Vista as well, so don't waste your money on a chip that may or may not run Vista well...

keep what you have. the money spent on an FX wont bring godly increases in framerate. especially since most games depend on the video card more.

as great as dualcores are, there are only 2 known popular games that support them. which are FEAR and Quake4. ATI and nvidia both have drivers that support dualcore, but it doesnt mean you're going to see any kind of remarkable increase in speed on ANYTHING.

there are no games that fully take advantage of dualcore, just like the 64bit bandwagon that everyone here was on 2 years ago. and there prolly wont be any in the next few months.

if you really dont do media related stuff a lot and are just a gamer, you should keep what you have. i got dualcore as a gift, and i happen to use Adobe Premiere and FRAPS programs which take advantage of it. but im still a pro gamer.

in my opinion, the FXs dont warrant their cost unless you have phase change, which also costs a lot of money in itself.

alright u guys have made ur points .. im sticking with what i have for now .. maybe ill wait till the socket m2 switch and ddr 2 or wutever .. i currently have a 512mb gtx and another one on the way .. so i guess that will help alot more then another cpu for now .. plus when the 3007 30 inch dell becomes avaible .. ill need the sli to game at that resolution

The FX-60 sounds like a good choice if you can get it, unlocked multi on a DC... . But if you want instant gratification a X2 could do the job, they seem to be clocking nicely.

if i go dual core i need at least 2.6-2.7 to be happy .. i really dont wanna get a fx 60 .. since it was already selling on ebay for 1500 lol

thanks ill check it out .. seems like alot of people sell brand new fx57s for like 850 shipped .. if i can sell my cpu for decent i could pick one up for not that much

it seems like the fx57 is a great chip even for people not using phase .. in that article they did 3.2 on air with just raising the multi to 16x ..

if i could get an fx57 for 850 id prolly do it .. just not sure .. i have a guy who will sell me one for 850 shipped .. basically it would end up costing me 500

The value of the FX chips would appear to be mostly for someone wanting to bench and test stuff (ram and mobos, for example) since the unlocked multi allows you to set it up just about anyway you want so that you can truly compare apples to apples.

That said, for me even if I felt that I could afford it, it would be hard to justify the premium required to get it. Clearly a personal choice.

yeah its clearly a personal choice .. i have always wanted it .. this will keep me good for awhile until socket m2 or am2 comes around with ddr 2 .. etc .. and when the g80 comes around ..

as far as going dual core .. i have had 2 dual cores and returned them both .. a 3800 and a 4400 .. i dont really multitask as i said ... and if i do .. its more like browsing the net while burning .. or gaming while downloading .. etc lol .. no encoding .. etc ..

i guess im just not ready to jump on dual core

and ill only buy a fx57 if i can get one for like 800-850 .. wouldnt pay 1011 for one .. that is why waiting for the fx60 really isnt an option since its gonna be alot for at least a few months

Like you, my interests in the dual core are minimal. There are clearly times/applications where it performs better, but none of those are high on my priority list.

I'll probably also buy me an FX57...sometime around the year 2009...in the bargain/closeout bin of some "Dumping Goods" type store. :D
