Moving up to Number 6 in the world before september, thats what I think our goal should be. I mean in 2 days we've changed the days to over come them by almost 130 years.

I say, even slot #5 by september, if we get enough RAC.
So, everyone needs to buy a quad xeon 3.6. :)

I'd hate to think about how much a quad would cost to buy... The wife groans about this stuff now and didn't really care much about my idea of building a dually. I've got her convinced on the dually if I can keep it under (or around) $600 (U.S.) and don't use Tornados to cool it. :) So with that typed, I may be ordering some slick new parts in the next couple of days!!!

My Dual will be up today or tomorrow :-D

Also, you can pick up a quad PII Xeon 500's with like a Gig of memory for like 300-400 on ebay and Quad PIII 700's for like 500-700... After that your talking 3K+

well, if someone want to front some cash or hand over some parts, sure i'll build a quad.... :D (dam kids, always want to eat and be clothed) :)

i think we will have to wait a week or 2 to really evaluate what our goal should be (let the major credit dumps even out). Do we want a goal as in place, or membership or both?

What is the output in RAC on those machines? Just seems like it would be easier/better to get a 2ghz (or 2.4) machine and go from there hehe.

My pII xeon should be up today or tomorrow, i'll tell you what the RAC is in about a week when credits start flowing.

-i saw a HP server with 8 Xeons (PII's) for 550$ on ebay.

Back to the point of this topic ...

I think the goal should be to get the classic seti members over to boinc. Our team has the smallest number of active crunchers amoungst the top 10. Imagine what we could do if we just got everyone working on the same thing instead of half on the old, half on the new. If we're to ever have a chance at the top 5 we need more active members.
Perhaps someone can come up with a way to entice current classic users to switch over. I think it'd be smarter and easier to get the classic users switched then to try and entice new comers over (that'd be phase II ;))

I agree. Whens the ETA for classic to die? When that happens they'll have to switch to BOINC. . . i hope they just don't stop crunching.

They won't necessarily have to switch. A few have hinted that when classic is over so is their crunching seti.

the point is we should be encouraging them to switch and not just waiting and hoping.

I sure would like to buy some of those units they used for crunching. I realy do think they should convert to boinc seti II . Whats the point in Crunching iff you cant keep your team alive by Crunching work units. This team could pull into the number one spot with a little more hard work. I have added 3 new machines to my farm and just finished an Athlon 2600 + today. I know its costly beleive me ;but what is it your looking for being on this team. I look at us being # 1 in future that would be alot of hard work , I think we could doit . Yes ; most definitly talk old seti team members into going Boinc Seti II. So Crunch on everyone :attn:

This is why I feel there should be a move toward getting paid for this kinda stuff. I know that SETI will never pay but for future projects that might involve us crunching math that results in a "for profit" wonder drug for some big Pharmaceutical company or something I think they could donate a few clams to my Paypal account. Electricity and computer parts aren't free.

-Horribleron (25,000 SETI Classic, 30,000 SETI BOINC)

I will be the first one to admit yes it is very costly ; but its what i like doing and i must say its very hard to afford. I think its worth it :) As long as i have the money to do so i shall support Seti and this OCForums Team

How do we get people who do classic Seti to switch to boinc?

I would think one of the best ways would be through the ocforums or e-mailing some of the Classic seti members and let them know why it would be a great idea to move over to Boinc Seti II . Im sure it would not be so easy to convince them :)

I think one of the most convincing reasons is that BOINC is already doing more work than classic with far fewer users, because of the duplication in classic. Some of the WU's in classic have gone out dozens of times, whereas in BOINC, once you have a quorum of 3, the unit is done. BOINC is just a better system, that takes advantage of multi-CPU systems better, supports multiple projects easily and has remote-management capability for those of us with multiple boxes (or those with...ahem..."off-site" boxes).

That being said, I do think we should wait for some demonstrated stability from the Berkeley servers. I'm sure we're getting close now, with their dual Opteron fibre-channel RAID rig for the database. The last thing we want to do is convince a bunch of people to switch to a system that's not ready for prime time.

Just my $0.02...

Honestly I think it is going to be hard to "force converts" - since most of the folks still doing classic are as obsessed with getting their "final scores" as high as possible as we are with kicking all the boinc team's butts :)

Does the classic team owner have access to all member email addresses? What about a mailing encouraging people to move over - giving instructions, explaining how it works and answering all those common questions. Also laying out a summary of the team ranks at the time of the mailing - how close we are etc... sort of a "call to arms."

Not sure how else we can reach out to them - if they aren't checking forums we're just preaching to the choir. Anyone know of another way to communicate with our classic-team team-mates?

Also agree 100% with Florida that we can't really do anything until servers are stable - so we should use this time to do what we can to prepare.
