I want a high quality harddrive for my new pc. What is the latest in hd's? I would like to get the best I can. Thanks for any suggestions.:)

IMHO WD makes the best drives. So I would say look at the 100 and 120gig ones. I’ll be getting a 100 gig soon I think. Maxtor would be another brand to look at. :)

In every review I've read Western Digital 120GB has the best performance for IDE hard drives, shame they only make this new model in 120GB. If you want a 80GB one get an IBM 120GXP. The maxtors are pretty good as well, i never liked western digital.

If you want real performance go with SCSI (Seagate Cheeta 15,000RPM)

First IBM's have a HUGE failure rate, stay away from them though they are fast, plus they have a 8-11 "Hours on per day" recommendation from IBM.

Second, for a single drive desktop PC, the WD special edition with 8mb would be faster than SCSI.

the IBM 75GXP have a huge failure rate, i have not heard one person with a failed 120GXP. yeah only go for 120GXP if you want IBM.

"the WD special edition with 8mb would be faster than SCSI" - wrong, show me the benchmarks

I've heard very good things about the new Maxtor D740X series as well. They're supposed to be exceedingly fast. Even faster than the IBMs were.

actually, the figures i saw, the wd1000jb(100gig) was approx. 2 mg/sec off the first place cheetah15k. the atlas 10k was third, but i really think it wud be a tad faster than the ide drive.

and yes, they do come in 100 and 120 gig versions.

and the ibm drives are all built on the same basic principle, and the heat killed the 70's. But theoretically it is possible on any of the gxp drives.

the maxtors are not as fast as the IBM 120GXP or the Western digital 120GB, but they are probably much more reliable than both

na, special editions raid0=16mg buffer.

i have approx. .5 second load times for all adobe progies and approx 1 second for 3dmax.

although the ide prefetch does help
