What is the Geforce3 VMOD?

I've seen a few references to modifying the voltage on a Geforce3 around here. I think Silver did the same thing to his Gainward G3 Ti200. What is the vmod and what exactly is it used for? Also, is there a link somewhere that explains how it's done? Thx guys...
