I suspect that you are running either Windows 2000 or Windows XP. In either case, an error sufficiently severe will force your default startup and recovery option to execute, namely: reboot and log the error.

If you go to the "Advanced" tab of your system properties, you can select the "Startup and Recovery" button and deselect the default action in the event of a stop error to make it stop automatically rebooting.

Afterwards, you will instead get the famous BSOD.

Good luck.

Yeah, XP, and it just restarted two more times. :( I'll do what you said and see what happens.

Well, I got the BSOD three times. Why is this happening??? BTW, does this mean anything to anyone:

*** win32.sys – Address Bf87853E base at BF800000, DateStamp 367de698

Or does that mean nothing at all??????

You either clocked your memory too high (Check cooling on those). Or your clock is too high.

BRB

Yodums, it's been running stable at 146/37 FSB, 11.5X for a week and a half now with no problems. I just felt the ram and it's barely warm. Do you think it could be going bad??

What voltage is your ram running at? Because my Crucial would generate errors if I added voltages up around 3v without air on them...

Hmmm, I’m not sure. I’ll have to check on that.

Hey, new thought. Could this have anything at all to do with me downloading the latest xp updates today?? That’s the only thing that’s changed in the last few days that I can think of.

Could be. Moving this to OS.

Boot into Safe Mode. (Hit F8 at bootup and select the Safe Mode option)

Go into your MMC (right-click "My Computer", select "Manage") and look at the error codes in the event viewer under "System". Double-click on the error, and it will show you what is causing the crash. If you need to, you can take the error code to MS and load it into the search feature of MS Knowledge Base and see what it tells you.

I would suspect that you are having a driver conflict. Also, back the voltage down to something reasonable like 2.6 or 2.7 on the memory. Good luck!

Wow, I didn’t even know XP kept track of all that stuff. I checked the errors and they all say this:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
ultra

And this:

Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bf87853e, parameter3 f9400b04, parameter4 00000000.

Of course when I click this:

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

All I get is this:

There is no additional information about this issue in the Error and Event Log Messages or Knowledge Base databases at this time. You can use the links in the Support area to determine whether any additional information might be available elsewhere.

Why am I not surprised?? Hehe :p

I’ll work at it some more and see if I can figure out what’s wrong. I’ll let you know what happens, and thanks a lot guys for your help. :D

In reference to the Microsoft update's....
I too just downloaded some update's and 1 would not install and the other messed up my internet modem. I had to roll back the driver that it changed. Not sure if this has anything to do with your problem, but just wanted to give you this information.
Good luck. :)

Well everything seems to be fine now. It hasn’t rebooted at all today. I guess the problem was the Voodoo 5 driver that I got from the last update. I just rolled back to the one I was using before and all is well. :D

it might seem a little far fetched but consider your power supply if you still get this problem again. i've gone through numerous power supplies. the first time I've seen this was upgrading from a socket 7 cryix to a slot A athlon, I kept my 150wat power supply not knowing that the new boards required at least a 250 for stock settings, after about a month of use my system would restart just out of the blue, mainly when I used the cd to play games or install programs or apps. needless to say I fried the board. (when the cpu doesn't get the required voltage it freezes, and also the power supply overheating causes the system to restart). also, my friend bought a 400wat generic power supply but it doesn't put out the proclaimed voltages 5v actualy ~3-5 I think he said and 12v ~ 10-12. pretty sperattic, consider buying a better one if this is your problem.....I hope this helps.

I do not know what causes the spontaneous reboots but the frequency at which it occurs is definetly influenced by the FSB speed and CPU voltage. I have never seen this occur with a normally clocked CPU. It only occurs, at least in my experience, at moderate to extreme overclocking speeds. Conversely, raising the CPU voltage will reduce the frequency at which it occurs.

I do not believe it is related to the memory. I currently have my memory multiplier set at 3X so my memory speed is 3 X 2 X 133 = 798 Mhz. This is exactly where it should be yet at a 133 MHz FSB I still see some spontaneous reboots. Dropping to 130 MHz FSB completely eliminates the problem.

I hope this gives some insight into this problem.
