i've never played any of the GTA games but it seems like all of them are getting good reviews all around... with GTA4 about to come out in less than two weeks, i am thinking of picking it up but i'm wondering, what exactly makes these games good...? is it the free roaming...?

i like games that have a long-ish single player campaigns that will keep me interested till the end... i like games that are easy to get into but not so much that it's a shallow game... although i don't necessarily prefer FPS, i love Bioshock... i think i like it because it allows me to play the game at my own pace... it also offers some character customizations... although not shallow, the character customization is still easy to understand and intuitive...

i was wondering if GTA4 will be a good buy for me...

i should also add that i'm NOT the kind that gets into just one game and play just that one game for a few days till i finish... i'm not a heavy gamer and i usually play for around an hour at a time but i switch between 2 or 3 different games for each different session... like right now, i'm constantly jumping between Race 07, Bioshock, and Gears of War... and i'm about to add Assassin's Creed to the list... i bought Bioshock 8 days ago and i would say i'm only about 2 hours into it... i just beat the first boss... so i don't mind taking my time and if GTA4 is gonna be good, i wouldn't mind adding it to the mix...

Yes, it's free roaming, and, yes, that's what makes the series so great.

You can do so many things in the game... It's insane. Jump on an NPCs car, shoot people from it, run around for a bit, go to an airport and steal an airplane, parachute over army's base, steal a tank, blow crap up.... Etc, etc.

They really give you a TON of gameplay. The main storyline has TONS of missions. Then on top of that there are many many other types of missions and activities you can do. There are just so many things you can do in that game, it'll last for a super long time. But it's also real easy to get into. And maybe the best thing about it is the free roaming aspect and the fact that you can do the missions if you want or you can just drive all around the city and just find things to do. I'll usually play the missions until I get tired of them for the day or for a while, and then I'll just run around causing chaos. It's a lot of fun to drive/fly around and find different places to base jump (In GTA: San Andreas) or find a nice high perch and get plenty of sniper ammo and just go crazy and see how long you can hold the police back. There's so many other things to do, it's just a jam packed game!

Not having ever played any of the GTA series, I have a question. Is it a driving game that you would use a wheel for? Or is the driving just a means to get from place to place? I might check into trying it out but want to know what platform to get or controler scheme to use.

Not one for a wheel. The driving can be a pretty big part of the game as you could spend all day just messing with the cops and then trying to loose them on the road, but you will find that a wheel is not needed nor would it do you much good with the style/mechanics of the game.

How did I miss the multiplayer roaming? If its done well, it sounds like it could be something awesome.

O'MAn That game has alot of the golden days of hiphop. All the 'ol school gansta rap, G!! LOL, I used to jamm all that stuff you hear in game on my 6X9's mounted funky in my '89 escort GT yO! Todays "hiphop" (if you can call it that) SUCKS!! imho...'97 were the last days of good mainstream rap/hiphop.

Memory lane for me when playing that game...heh, 'eavy metal, rap and "high" school...heh good 'ol days.

I've played all the GTA's....by far the best game series on the market....I'll always check out a new GTA. Just like the BF series.
