I need to upgrade my motherboard. I'm looking for a mother board that will support both P2 and P3 because I currenlty own a P2 300 and plan to upgrade in about a month. Should support at least 1 GB of memory and 1000mhz+. AGP 4x or pro, 4pci+, ata100 if possible, and not a intel chipset. I want to overclock the p3 chip I get to a 1ghz. So which chip should I also get that will reach the high. Thankx for your time. L8r

I would suggest that you wait and buy your MB at the same time as your CPU, so that you can get a motherboard that has socket 370. If you buy a motherboard that supports both, youll need a slot 1 motherboard, which is alot older. Ill find a good board that supports both in a sec though

I heard that the asus P3V4X is good. Some people even got to the 1000mhz mark on that mobo. What do you guys think?

Yes the P3V4X is a very good board. However, it is being discontinued by ASUS. If you are going to upgrade your P2-300 in another month, I would also suggest that you wait on the motherboard. You will be glad you did and can get the newer Intel I815e chipset.

Whats the highest possible speed with the asus p3v4x and I heard something about the mobo having lower fsb speeds than an older version. Is this the bios, or the chipset?

if you're gonna use intel processors, then use an intel-based motherboard.

get the Abit BE6-II/BF6 or MSI BXMaster. 2 of the best BX boards out there....and better than VIA 133A and i815E/i815EP.

Slot boards will never die out untill they quit making converter cards...personaly I preffer a slot board, because I can use either design, socket or slot...with a 370 chip and a slot converter you can use the slot board, and when u want to play with your old PII, you can simply pop it in and clear the cmos and boot up....and if you are going to get a slot board, I would recomend the BE6-2 ver2(bx chipset), or the SH6 (815E chipset).
both boards are made by Abit The SH6 does not have raid, but it has ata100 (naitive) 1/2 agp, 133mhz bus support.
Intel just might change their socket design soon, but it ain't out now..and just may turn out to be vaporware
I am currently running the SH6 and I can run 1.12g...I turned it down to 1059 for longevity, but this is the most stable board I have ever owned, and one of the easiest to clock... almost childs play. I don't think I will need a new board for quite some time..and when the time comes, hopefully the P4 will have all the probs ironed out, and have support for ddr mem...right now, my PIII smokes a P4 in multimedia scores and raw computing power, and the only way the P4 outshines mine, is in the memory benchmark...so far, I think the 815E is the best chipset intel has come out with.
Just my opinion

Quick question??
I just did a search about the Asus P3V4X MOBO an got your discussion.
I need some quick advise! I'm looking at an Asus P3V4X with a PIII 800E CPU. Is this a good combo? I have been looking at the Asus CUSL2-C as my favorite, but am hoping for new input on the subject...

If you are looking to overclock...then stay away from the 800E...stick with a 700E, and make sure it has the cCO stepping.
I have seen realy high clock speeds posted with that board, but I have no experience with asus boards...I'm strictly an ABIT man...got a BE6 way back when, and fell in love with abit boards...and the be6 has seen many processor upgrads, and is running now.
But if there were no Abit, asus would be my choice..and the P3V4X would be the one I would choose.

posting this now on a P3V4X and have a 933 EB at 1022. Could probably go higher with a higher voltage but just wanted to break the gig barrier (which isn't much) but figured I'd respond. This board is very good for OC'ing.....has ton's of FSB's settings and has been rock solid (cept for my memory failures). You can set the PCI to 4 different settings and I've sold about 40 of em to customers. (it was once said "you can't be a good salesman unless you believe in your product......I like the board and have sold it a few times because of it)

I'd highly recommend the board as a solid preformer and an OC'r board as well. I recommended the board to my best friend and he's using it now...

the only disadvantage of the P3V4X in overclocking is that it lacks the 1mhz incriments...it jumps in rather big steps so if you miss this fsb, then it's a loss for you.

get the BF6 and an ATA100/RAID controller instead of the HighPoint controller.

What does cCO mean? I think I'm gonnna get the P3700E. What's the difference with SECC and SECC2 and E and EB? Also I heard that the newer P3v4x has lower FSB Settings, is this true?

I TRIED A DIFFERNT CPU DIFFERT MEMORY NOTHING.ALSO THE KEY BOARD WILL ONLY LIGHT UP WHEN YOU FIRST PLUG IT INFOR A SECOND THAT IS IT. IT TOOK ME TWO MONTHS TO GET ALL THE NEW STUFF,CASE, MOBO, PIII800, 128MG MEMORY,NEW SOUNDCARD, 32MG AGPCARD.ALL THIS AND I CAN'T USE IT, CAN ANYBODY HELP?

THANK YOU,

I just bought an asus p3v4x. But, I'm still unable to run the system. I think the ps/2 ports are messed up, because the keyboard will boot up, but I get no response from the keyboard. I can't start the system because I can't get past BIOS because the keyboard won't work. My keyboard is fine. I tried on a different system. What could be wrong? It's brand new in the retail box. I can send it back, but i don't want to go through the hassle. Any suggestions?
