I remember someone saying that there was an artifacts tester that u could use to just run when u are pushing ur oc's to see if its an ok speed. what is this?
However, it has not been updated for quite some time and it is a DirectX 7 program. I myself have not found it useful in that it will often say everything is OK but I will still get artifacts in 3DMark03.
Hmmmmm... My card will run 3dmark03 artifact-free up to 460MHz memory speed, but artifact tester seems to pass my card well into the 500MHz range, where artifacting is very evident during the benchmark. Are there other alternatives to this utility?
I found the dragon and nature tests in 3dmark01 to be very helpful. That artifact tester did not work too great imo. I could pass under the most extensive test, but still get plenty of artifacts in 3dmark and games.
I had an opposite problem with the artifact tester software wheras it would show artifacts in artifact tester but during any game/benchmark it would show zero artifacts. All in all I reccomend using your eyes and your favorite games/benchmarks to test with as any artifacts should become painfully visible to you.
Troll's lair and Nature definitely show up artifacts/cooling problems (like I have a crap cooler on my 9600XT, runs the benches fine for the first half and then crazy stuff starts to happen at 530MHz). Pity I can't buy 3dm03 though
also some of the ati dx 9 demos work well, in particular the "Car Paint" and "Chimp" demos are very good tests for oc'ed memory. just leave the demo running for more than 10 minutes and the whole screen will turn corrupt or you'll see a long triangle(s) artifact from the center of the screen if its not a stable oc. (don't press w for wireframe, you get artifacts way too easily )
