Hey before i start here's my spec:
Asus a7a266 board
T Bird 1ghz with coolermaster sink and fan
128mb DDR
Geforce 2
SB Live
30gb Hardrive
Win 98

I've just built a computer with the above spec however i only had a vague idea about bios multiplier settings. On boot up it says that all is configured properly, 100mhz processor, 128mb ram etc., but when it comes to the Windows log on screen occasionally some strange things happen:
1) The computer restarts
2) A Red Line appears at the top of the screen and the computer freezes
3)Windows boots up normally, this does happen and windows runs fine.

This happens fairly often and i remember that a similar Red Line appeared when i first installed windows. Infact the installation of windows did not run smoothly as i got a BLUE SCREEN saying VxD error.
However i eventually got windows installed but was faced with the above problem of the red line and constant crashing whenever i played a game such as Half-Life, Black and White.

I am at the end of my wits trying to fix the thing and really need experts' advice. Finally on my temperature monitor it says that the processor runs at 40 C and the board at 28 C.

Please Help me!!

What driver are you using for that GForce. It sounds like a video driver issue. Your video driver is loaded while windows boots, that's why you get it there, and it's being utilized when playing 3D games, and that's why you see it there also.

I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM!!! It took me forever to fix it!! I found out that this file in the registry was conflicting with my video drivers. It tried to load when Windows did. You need to do a file search under windows and look for a file called drvwq117.vxd and delete it. Then go to the start button and go to run and type regedit and do a search for the same file. Delete all trace of it. This file is a tape drive detection driver. You do not need it. This is no guarntee, but it sounds excatly what happened to me awhile ago. Let me know.
