What to do to imprve the performance of a Hp Pavilion 8275, 300 mhz pentium 2

I tried to upgrade with a Evergreen performa 600 mhz CPU but could only get it to run at 150 mhz on safemode. Could not upgrade my BIOS whoch I thought might be theproblem. I have 160 mb of ram, And I would like to overclock the CPU. Has anyone done this with this computer and with what results ? Does anyone have any special recommendations ?
