I have my old Dell desktop that I bought back in 2003 with a clunky CRT monitor. What do people generally do with their computers? I don't have the windows cd anymore, so I can't format and still have a functional computer, which means I can't really donate it. I might just recycle it, but I don't really know how to go about doing that either. Any ideas? I just want to get this thing out of my closet.

Not that I have room to talk as I haven't got into it yet even though I plan to, you could probably install a free linux distro and use it for folding if you can afford the extra power consumption or junk sitting around.

You could fold on it. It's a nice way to kill it, helping humanity out =)
If not then destroy the HDD and either sell or donate the rest of the parts.

Could always just wipe the HD, throw Ubuntu on it, and put it up on Craigslist for 40 or 50 bucks. I don't think it would be too hard to find a taker.

If this were my machine, I would wipe the hard disk with DBAN (min 3 passes), install Ubuntu on it, then donate it and let them know the root/sudo password.

As an additional option, I sometimes give old computers to older people in my extended family that would like to learn how to e-mail/surf the web.

Ubuntu seems to be the consensus here. I'll have to look into it, I have no experience using it. Thanks for the tips.

Find a matching OEM windows CD and reinstall windows. It will sell on craigslist for $50 - 100 with a monitor.

Put on curb. Post FREE AS IS COMPUTER HERE on craigslist. Gone within an hour.

take HD out first. You never know if someone who took em are the one who tries to unformat the HD and undelete files in search of sensitive information.

Or better yet, boot off a CD or USB, copy in loads of porn pictures until the HD is full, any old files would have been overwritten and dang near impossible to recover. The leave the computer on curb by someone's house that you don't like. :D

I pick up old boxes, blow the dust out, plug them in somewhere on my network, and then use them to either Fold or encode video.

There is no such thing as an old computer, its correct term is a Linux box :D (you can download Linux free and have a functional computer)

Things you can do with Linux and an old computer.

1) Connect it to your router and setup a webcache to speed up your internet access.
2) Use it as a Fileserver
3) Web Proxy to fillter the internet.
4) email server
5) Install a Desktop distribution and learn about Linux

no screen is required for suggestions 1-4

Load it down with disks and put FreeNas on it with ZFS file system. Oh what a difference that makes. Of course, you may not need the file backup.
